Baltimore Orioles third baseman Pedro Alvarez has cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Triple-A Norfolk. He was designated for assignment earlier in the week and is now off the Orioles 40-man roster. Alvarez hit eight home runs and knocked in 18 runs, but hit just .180 before being demoted. He belongs on the waiver wire in all leagues, especially now that he's not even on the 40-man roster.
Baltimore Orioles designated hitter Pedro Alvarez was designated for assignment on Tuesday and catcher Caleb Joseph was called up in his stead. Alvarez was in the midst of his worst season to date, hitting a paltry .180 with eight homers and 18 RBI while almost exclusively facing right-handed pitching. Alvarez will likely get a chance to latch on somewhere in the minors, but his days as a contributor to a major league time might be numbered.
Pedro Alvarez Leaves Game Thursday with Hamstring Cramping
MASNSports Orioles writer Rich Kubatko reports that third baseman/designated hitter Pedro Alvarez left Thursday's game due to hamstring cramping. Alvarez was 0-for-2 with a run scored in the game before he was pinch hit for by Anthony Santander in the fifth inning. It doesn't appear that this will affect Alvarez for very long, but fantasy owners might not want to be patient with the 31-year-old, who is hitting .095 with one home run, seven strikeouts and a .374 OPS over 21 plate appearances in May.
Pedro Alvarez Crushes Two Homers In Win Over Tigers
Baltimore Orioles third baseman Pedro Alvarez had quite the day at the plate on Sunday, April 29. He went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs. Both of those hits were of the trot-around-the-bases variety and they were his fifth and sixth of the season. He's quietly starting off the season on a 30-homer pace. It's unknown if he's going to be able to sustain it, but he could be worth grabbing in a deeper league.
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis will be out of the lineup on Saturday against Francisco Liriano and the Detroit Tigers according to Rich Dubroff of BaseballPress.com. It is simply a day off for Davis, who had started at first over the last 16 games for Baltimore as Dubroff reports Davis will be back in the lineup tomorrow. Pedro Alvarez is also sitting on Saturday after playing in nine straight. With the pair out of the lineup, Trey Mancini will get the start at first, Craig Gentry and Joey Rickard will start in the outfield and Anthony Santander will slot in at designated hitter.
Pedro Alvarez Belts Homer, Working His Way into Fantasy Relevance
Baltimore Orioles designated hitter Pedro Alvarez had a big day on Saturday in the loss against the Red Sox. Alvarez went 2-for-3 with a walk, a single, and a two-run home run. It was his second homer of the year and the two RBI in the game brought his total to seven to go along with an excellent .304 average. While his 1.136 OPS will be hard to sustain over a full season, Alvarez is now firmly entrenched as the everyday DH against right-handed pitchers, meaning he will get the lion's share of at bats, and could become a sneaky pickup in a pinch.
Free-agent infielder Pedro Alvarez signed with the Baltimore Orioles, according to Rock Kubatko of MASN Sports. This is a minor league deal with a spring training invitation, where he will provide depth at the corner infield spots. Alvarez has now signed with the Orioles in three consecutive seasons, as he performed well in 2016 (.249/.322/.504 with 22 home runs in 376 plate appearances) but was a non-factor at the big league level last season. The left-handed Alvarez totaled just 34 plate appearances with the Orioles and spent nearly all of the year at Triple-A Norfolk, where he hit an underwhelming .239/.294/.442 with 26 home runs in 595 PAs.
