Ross Stripling Announces His Retirement

Right-handed pitcher Ross Stripling announced his retirement from professional baseball on Monday with a post on X. Stripling will call it quits after failing to make the Opening Day roster with the Kansas City Royals this spring out of camp. The 35-year-old veteran was originally a fifth-round pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2012 out of Texas A&M. He spent the first four years of his major-league career with the Dodgers and also made his lone All-Star appearance with the team back in 2018, when he went 8-6 with a 3.02 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 136:22 K:BB in 122 innings pitched. Stripling really struggled on the mound in his final two years with the San Francisco Giants and Athletics, posting a combined 5.68 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 174 1/3 frames. He ends his nine-year MLB career with a 4.17 ERA (4.06 FIP), 1.24 WHIP, 20.9% strikeout rate and 5.6% walk rate in 846 1/3 regular-season innings.

Ross Stripling Signs Minor-League Deal With Kansas City

Right-handed pitcher Ross Stripling signed a minor-league deal with the Kanas City Royals on Wednesday. This contract includes an invitation to spring training. Stripling spent the entire 2024 campaign with the Oakland Athletics, holding a poor 6.01 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP across 85 1/3 innings. He tallied strikeouts at a poor 12.9 percent rate but showed a strong command of his pitches with a 5.8 percent walk rate. He also generated a 35.3 percent hard-hit rate and a 6.8 percent barrel rate, which placed him in the 78th and 69th percentile, respectively. He posted a career-best 3.01 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP across 134 1/3 innings with the Toronto Blue Jays during the 2021 campaign. Fantasy managers should expect Stripling to compete for a long-relief role during spring training. However, given his struggles last season, he will likely open the campaign at Triple-A.

A's Hope To Activate Ross Stripling For Final Weekend

Oakland Athletics right-hander Ross Stripling (back) faced hitters in a live batting practice session on Tuesday, and the A's hope to activate him off the injured list in time for their final series of the 2024 regular season against the division-rival Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park, which starts this Friday and runs through Sunday. The 34-year-old will likely be available out of the team's bullpen this weekend in the final series of the regular season, but fantasy managers should stay away in all formats if they are still playing for something. Stripling has been injured for a good chunk of his first season with the A's and hasn't been good when he's been available, sporting a 2-11 record, 6.08 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, 49 strikeouts and 21 walks in 84 1/3 innings pitched over his 21 appearances (14 starts). He hasn't pitched since Sept. 8 and hasn't started a game for the A's since Aug. 6.

Ross Stripling To Face Live Hitters On Tuesday

Oakland Athletics right-hander Ross Stripling (back) came away feeling healthy from a 30-pitch bullpen session on Saturday at Oakland Coliseum and is scheduled to face live hitters on Tuesday. If all goes well with that session, Stripling is expected to be activated from the injured list in time for the team's final series of the season against the division-rival Seattle Mariners on the road this weekend, which starts on Friday, Sept. 27. It's unclear if the A's will use Stripling for a traditional start or just out of the bullpen for the final series of the year this weekend, but fantasy managers should stay away regardless. When the 34-year-old veteran hasn't been hurt this year, he's been way too hittable, going 2-11 with a 6.08 ERA and 1.54 WHIP with only 49 strikeouts and 21 walks in 21 appearances (14 starts) covering 84 1/3 innings in his first year in Oakland.

Ross Stripling To Throw A Longer Bullpen On Saturday

Oakland Athletics right-hander Ross Stripling (back) felt his back "lock up" during the team's 4-3 win over the Houston Astros back on Sept. 10. Stripling threw a 25-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday, which mostly consisted of fastballs while also mixing in each of his offspeed pitches. He said afterward that he felt good and that he's scheduled to throw a longer bullpen on Saturday. With Stripling's injured-list placement retroactive to Sept. 9, he's hopeful of making his return when first eligible to come off the IL on Sept. 24. It looks like the 34-year-old veteran will be able to return to the big-league roster before the end of the 2024 season, but Stripling is well off the fantasy radar already. In his 21 outings (14 starts) in Oakland in 2024, Stripling has gone 2-11 with a career-worst 6.08 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in 84 1/3 innings. He also has a career-worst 13% strikeout rate.

Ross Stripling To Throw A Bullpen On Wednesday

Oakland Athletics right-hander Ross Stripling (back) felt his back "lock up" during the team's win over the division-rival Houston Astros on Sept. 10. Stripling has resumed throwing and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday and another one when the team returns home from its nine-game road trip. He is hopeful to return during the final week of the regular season. Stripling's injured-list stint was retroactive to Sept. 9, and the A's are hopeful that he can return when first eligible on Sept. 24. The 34-year-old veteran is attempting to return from a lower-back strain, but no fantasy managers should be waiting around for him. Stripling has been pretty bad in his first year with the A's in 2024, going 2-11 with a career-worst 6.08 ERA, a 1.54 WHIP and a career-low 13% walk rate in 84 1/3 innings over his 21 appearances (14 starts).

Ross Stripling To Be Activated And Start On Thursday

Oakland Athletics right-hander Ross Stripling (elbow) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Thursday's series opener on the road in Anaheim against the division-rival Los Angeles Angels, according to manager Mark Kotsay. Not only was Stripling not a viable fantasy option in mixed fantasy leagues earlier this year before his injury, but the 34-year-old veteran is likely to be on a pitch count in his first start back on Thursday after only getting up to 56 pitches during his minor-league rehab assignment, which consisted of three subpar outings. The matchup is one of the best you can ask for, but Stripling was awful in his first 11 starts for the A's, going 1-9 with a 5.82 ERA and 1.59 WHIP with just 35 strikeouts in 55 2/3 innings pitched. There's no upside to speak of from a strikeout perspective with Stripling.

Ross Stripling Set For Bullpen Session

Oakland Athletics right-hander Ross Stripling (elbow), who is working his way back from a strained right pitching elbow, was set to throw a bullpen session on either Monday or Tuesday after a five-inning minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Las Vegas last Friday. Stripling got up to 52 pitches in his latest rehab start for the Aviators and may only need one more rehab start before being reinstated from the injured list. Although the 34-year-old veteran wasn't very good prior to his injury, he should return to a starting role for the lowly A's. In his first 11 starts in Oakland in the first half of the season, Stripling went just 1-9 with a 5.82 ERA (4.00 FIP) and 1.59 WHIP with just 35 strikeouts and 12 walks in 55 2/3 innings pitched. Fantasy managers in mixed leagues should continue to ignore Stripling when he's back with the A's.

Ross Stripling Struggles Again In Rehab Start

Oakland Athletics right-hander Ross Stripling (elbow) hasn't fared well so far in his two minor-league rehab appearances. In his second rehab start for Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday, Stripling allowed three earned runs on five hits while walking one and fanning one in three innings of work. He threw 37 of his 56 pitches for strikes after going less than an inning in his first rehab appearance for Single-A Stockton. While the results weren't all that pretty on Sunday for the Aviators, it was surely an improvement over his first rehab start. Stripling is likely to need at least one more rehab outing in the minors before coming off the 15-day injured list to rejoin Oakland's rotation in the second half. The 34-year-old went 1-9 before his injury with a 5.82 ERA and 1.59 WHIP with just 35 strikeouts in 11 starts, so he'll only be worth looking at in AL-only leagues when he's back in the big leagues.

Ross Stripling, Paul Blackburn To Stay In Single-A

Oakland Athletics right-hander Ross Stripling (elbow) came away from his first minor-league rehab start with Single-A Stockton on Tuesday feeling healthy. His next rehab outing is expected to come with Stockton on Sunday. Right-hander Paul Blackburn (foot) also came away feeling healthy from his first rehab outing with Stockton on Tuesday, and his next appearance will also come with Stockton on Sunday. Stripling is recovering from a right elbow flexor strain, while Blackburn is rehabbing from a right foot stress reaction. Barring setbacks, both pitchers should rejoin Oakland's starting rotation later this month, although neither have much upside for fantasy managers with the lowly A's. Stripling gave up two runs in just two-thirds of an inning on Tuesday, while Blackburn also went just two-thirds of an inning and gave up three earned runs with Stockton.
