Baltimore Orioles infielder Shed Long Jr. (leg) has started a minor league rehab assignment with Single-A Delmarva. Long has yet to play this year while fighting through a lower leg injury. The 26-year-old played in 34 games for the Seattle Mariners last year and had a slash line of just .198/.258/.360 with four home runs, 17 RBI, 13 runs scored and one stolen base in 111 at-bats. He won't be guaranteed a major league roster spot in Baltimore once he's healthy. In his three major league seasons with the Mariners, Long has hit .216/.284/.376 with 12 home runs, 41 RBI, 44 runs scored and eight stolen bases in 110 total games.
Shed Long Jr. Among Players Outrighted Off Mariners Roster
Seattle Mariners utility man Shed Long Jr. (shin) was one of a number of players outrighted off the 40-man roster Friday. Utility man Sam Haggerty, pitcher Darren McCaughan, outfielder Marcus Wilson, and pitcher Ryan Weber were also sent to Triple-A. Long Jr. and Weber have both elected free agency. It's been a tough road for Long Jr., who has had each of the last two seasons end with shin issues. There's some power and speed upside, but it's hard to imagine Long Jr. being a factor for fantasy managers entering 2022 no matter where he ends up.
Seattle Mariners second baseman/outfielder Shed Long Jr. (shin) visited a specialist recently to have his right shin examined, according to Daniel Kramer of MLB.com. Long has been on the injured list with a right shin stress reaction which is the same injury that ended his 2020 campaign and required off-season surgery. Clearly this is not a good sign for Long, as it seems he may once again find his season cut short. Long was slashing .198/.258/.360 over 34 games this season, so there's really no reason to hold onto him at this point in any redraft format.
Shed Long Jr. Placed On Injured List With Shin Injury
The Seattle Mariners placed second baseman/outfielder Shed Long Jr. (shin) on the 10-day injured list on Monday. Outfielder Jake Fraley was activated from the COVID list in a corresponding move. Long is dealing with a right shin stress reaction, the same injury that brought his 2020 season to an end and required offseason surgery. The 25-year-old Long has yet to find much comfort against major league pitching. This year, he's slashing .198/.258/.360 with four home runs, one stolen base, 17 RBI and 13 runs over 34 games. While he is out, Dylan Moore and Abraham Toro both have more clear paths to playing time.
Seattle Mariners utility man Shed Long Jr. reached base twice against the Oakland Athletics Friday, going 0-for-2 with two walks, and he took advantage by swiping his first base of the season. Long Jr. was expected to provide a bit of speed and a bit of pop, but it's taken him 108 plate appearances this year to get on the board in the speed department. With just four homers and a .601 OPS on the year, Long Jr. should not be on fantasy rosters.
Seattle Mariners utility man Shed Long Jr. hit a two-run double off Los Angeles Angels starter Alex Cobb Friday, his only hit in three at-bats. He also walked once and scored a run. Long Jr. has been a regular presence in the starting lineup since returning from the injured list on June 8, and he's provided some pop with four home runs and a .442 slugging percentage in 77 at-bats. Much of Long Jr.'s value was expected to come from his speed, but he has yet to swipe a bag this season. For now, he is best left on waiver wires, but if those steals start to add up, he could be a worthy add in deeper formats.
Seattle Mariners utility man Shed Long Jr. went 1-for-3 with a solo home run Sunday, a long shot to right field off Texas Rangers starter Mike Foltynewicz. It was his fourth homer of the year. Long Jr. has been starting most games since returning from the injured list on June 8, and spending most of his time batting in the ninth spot of the lineup. He offers a little pop and a little speed, but his .209/.243/.463 slash line leaves plenty to be desired and he doesn't belong on fantasy rosters.
Seattle Mariners utility man Shed Long Jr. went deep again Thursday, hitting a two-run home run off Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu. It was Long Jr.'s third home run of the season, and his only hit in five at-bats in the game. While he has not yet stolen a base this season, Long Jr. does offer some speed in addition to the occasional home run. Though he's only playing semi-regularly, could make a versatile addition for fantasy managers in deep leagues.
Shed Long Jr. Benched In Sunday’s Game 1 For Lack Of Hustle
Seattle Mariners' second baseman Shed Long Jr. was removed in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the White Sox due to lack of hustle. He went 0-for-3 with a strikeout before being removed from the game. He did appear as a pinch-hitter in Game 2 and struck out in his only plate appearance. "Shed Long is not injured but was instead replaced due to not "busting it out of the box'' on his grounder in the fifth," said manager Scott Servais. "We have a standard, we are going to run hard all the time. Felt Long didn't do that there." Long is slashing .245/.431/.677 with two home runs, 11 RBI, and eight runs scored across 53 plate appearances in 2021. The 25-year-old has fantasy appeal in deep-league formats, but his lack of hustle in Sunday's game only hurts Long's bid for everyday at-bats.
Seattle Mariners utility man Shed Long Jr. came up with yet another big hit Tuesday, launching a game-winning home run in the bottom of the eighth inning off Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Tyler Kinley. It was his only hit in three at-bats for the game. Long Jr. now has a .783 OPS in 44 at-bats on the season, and could be earning some more playing time. He has some speed as well, making him perhaps a fringe roster consideration, but his value is capped batting towards the bottom of the order on a mediocre offense.
