Sixto Sánchez News
Miami Marlins right-hander Sixto Sanchez will be on the team's Opening Day roster, according to manager Skip Schumaker. Sanchez hasn't pitched in the big leagues since the shortened 2020 season due to multiple shoulder injuries, so the fact that he will even start in the big leagues is a modest surprise for the Fish. The 25-year-old former top prospect tossed seven scoreless Grapefruit League innings this spring while walking three and striking out four and will open his second MLB season in a relief role, which puts him off the fantasy radar for now. It's hard to predict how Sanchez will fare because of how long of a layoff he's had due to injuries. In his rookie campaign in 2023, he showed promising upside with a 3.46 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with 11 walks and 33 K's in 39 innings over just seven starts.
Miami Marlins right-hander Sixto Sanchez (shoulder) faced live hitters Wednesday for the first time since last September when he appeared in a rehab game before being shut down again due to his ailing right shoulder. The rehab outing was his first appearance since the 2020 season when he tossed a 3.46 ERA for the Fish in seven starts down the stretch en route to a surprising playoff berth. However, he underwent shoulder surgery shortly after and has yet to appear in a big-league game since. Now 25, the former top prospect is out of minor league options and reportedly is not guaranteed a spot on the Opening Day roster. As a result, the Marlins would likely lose Sanchez on waivers as an attractive reclamation project for a rival club if he does not make the team.
Miami Marlins right-hander Sixto Sanchez (shoulder) told the media on Thursday at spring training that he feels 90 to 95 percent ready to go for the 2024 season. We'll believe it when we see it. Sanchez made his first appearance since 2020 in a rehab game with Double-A Pensacola last September but was then shut down shortly after that due to more shoulder issues. The 25-year-old is trending in the right direction in spring training this year, but fantasy managers should be highly skeptical as to whether he will be able to hold up over the course of a full season again. The Dominican hurler made seven starts in his MLB debut in 2020 and went 3-2 with a 3.46 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with 11 walks and 33 strikeouts in 39 innings. Sanchez has age on his side, but he should open the year on the waiver wire in most single-year fantasy formats.

Sixto Sanchez went 3-2 with a 3.46 ERA over 39 IP in his big league debut, but the 22-year-old starter likely has some growing to do before he's ready to serve as a fantasy ace. His 4.08 xFIP wasn't as strong as his ERA. Furthermore, Sanchez only struck out 20.9% of his opponents in the regular season. The Miami Marlin averaged 99 mph last year, ranking in the 97th percentile for fastball velocity. Sadly, his 2,164 RPM spin rate only ranked in the 18th percentile. Scouts agree that his heater underperforms the radar gun because it lacks life, and Sanchez actually needed to throw a sinker because RHB torched his four-seamer for a .421 xwOBA in 2020. He also struggled to command his heater at times with a 47.8 Zone%. Sanchez has elite secondaries including a changeup (18.3 SwStr%, 51.6 Zone%, 45.9% chase rate) and slider (12.6 SwStr%, 53.1 Zone%), so he should be fantastic when he figures out how to harness his velocity. Unfortunately, there's no guarantee that it happens in 2021, and the Fish will likely have him on a strict innings limit. The kid oozes talent, but he's still an adjustment away from his full potential. As such, his current ADP of 118.43 is probably too steep in redraft formats.
