Washington Nationals infielder Stephen Drew is retiring after 12 major league seasons. The former 15th pick overall of the 2004 draft recently had ankle surgery and that's enough to call it quits. He'll spend time now coaching his kids. He retires with an OPS plus of 94 and a 17.1 wins above replacement.
Washington Nationals infielder Stephen Drew (abdomen) took grounders at second base on Tuesday. It was his first infield practice since he landed on the disabled list in late July with an abdominal strain. Drew should be ready to rejoin the Nationals before the end of the month and would likely be added depth in the middle infield. He has a .660 OPS this season in 47 games.
