The San Francisco Giants signed free-agent right-hander Tommy Romero to a minor-league deal on Thursday. Romero made his major-league debut in 2022 with the Tampa Bay Rays and also saw action with the Washington Nationals, allowing 12 runs (10 earned) on 11 hits (seven home runs) while walking nine and striking out seven in 8 1/3 innings over four appearances (two starts). He didn't pitch in the majors at all last year and went 5-7 with a 5.44 ERA and 1.68 WHIP with 61 walks and 82 strikeouts in 87 2/3 innings over 36 outings (10 starts) for Triple-A Rochester in the Nationals organization. The 26-year-old will most likely open the 2024 campaign with Triple-A Sacramento as pitching depth for the Gigantes.

Nationals Claim Tommy Romero Off Waivers
The Washington Nationals claimed right-hander Tommy Romero off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Rochester. The 25-year-old pitched in three games for the Rays this year and had a 3.51 ERA in 66 2/3 innings at Triple-A Durham. Romero is expected to join Rochester's starting rotation. He allowed four earned runs on three hits (two home runs) while walking five and striking out five in his first 4 2/3 major league innings over three appearances (one start). Romero was briefly moved to a relief role when he was sent down to Durham, but he'll be a starting pitcher moving forward with Washington.

Tommy Romero Designated For Assignment By Rays
The Tampa Bay Rays designated right-handers Tommy Romero and Kevin Herget for assignment on Tuesday to make room for right-hander JT Chargois (oblique), who was reinstated from the injured list. Left-hander Brendan McKay (shoulder) was also reinstated from the 60-day injured list, but he was then optioned to Triple-A Durham. Romero made his first three major league appearances (one start) earlier this year, allowing four earned runs on three hits while walking five and striking out five in 4 2/3 innings. The 25-year-old also struggled as a starter in the minors and had a 3.51 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 58 strikeouts and 25 walks in 66 2/3 frames over 23 outings (13 starts) at Durham. Once a promising prospect for Tampa, other teams could attempt to claim him off waivers.

Rays
Tommy Romero Will Start On Tuesday
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Tommy Romero will make his MLB debut against the Oakland A's on Tuesday. The Rays called up their No. 18 prospect earlier in the day on Monday and will waste little time getting him a taste of the big leagues. Romero will take the injured Ryan Yarbrough's (groin) spot in the rotation. Romero is worth keeping an eye on as a possible streamer as he racked up 145 strikeouts across 110 1/3 innings of work in the minors in 2021.

Tommy Romero Being Called Up By Rays
Right-handed pitching prospect Tommy Romero is being called up by the Tampa Bay Rays, according to Jeff Passan. The 24-year-old, who is ranked as the team's No. 18 overall prospect via MLB Pipeline, has yet to pitch in the majors. Passan notes that Romero's stay in the majors may not be long-term. In 2021, Romero made 23 appearances across Double-A and Triple-A and pitched to a 2.61 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP while averaging 11.8 K/9. Romero leads with an impressive fastball that sits between 92 and 94 mph. He supports his fastball with a curveball and a changeup that both have a good amount of vertical drop.
