Travis Wood's Knee Injury Doesn't Look Promising

Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Travis Wood left Thursday's game against the Braves with a left knee sprain, but manager Ron Gardenhire says that things don't "look very good," leading to speculation that it could be more serious than a sprain. The 31-year-old pitcher had a rough go of things last year with the Royals and Padres, pitching to a 6.81 ERA on the year. Results of Wood's MRI could be known as early as Friday morning.

Travis Wood Has Torn ACL

Detroit Tigers pitcher Travis Wood (knee) has a torn ACL and medical meniscus, according to Jason Beck of MLB.com. He is weighing surgical options at the moment, but this is not good for the future for Wood. While he left Thursday's game with what was characterized as a "left knee sprain," manager Ron Gardenhire says that things did not "look very good," leading to speculation that it could be more serious than a sprain. Gardenhire's fears were confirmed, as Wood only made it through one outing in spring training. The 31-year-old pitcher had a rough go of things last year with the Royals and Padres, pitching to a 6.81 ERA on the year. He is likely done for the 2018 season, giving a boost to Daniel Norris' rotation hopes.

Travis Wood Has Left Knee Sprain

Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Travis Wood has been diagnosed with a left knee sprain. Wood suffered the injury Thursday in a rundown between second and third base while making his Grapefruit League debut against the Braves. He figures to undergo an MRI before the Tigers try to map out a recovery timetable. The veteran left-hander was expected to compete for a spot in Detroit's starting rotation this spring, but that plan will likely have to be scrapped.

Travis Wood Cleared For Action

Detroit Tigers pitcher Travis Wood (finger) has been cleared for Grapefruit League action. Wood broke his right index finger in a bow-hunting accident this offseason, but he is a left-hander so it will not affect his readiness for the start of the regular season. The 31-year-old signed a minor league contract with the rebuilding Tigers in late January and is competing for a rotation spot this spring.

Travis Wood Healing

Detroit Tigers pitcher Travis Wood (finger) had the splint removed from his fractured right index finger this week. Wood broke the finger in a bow-hunting accident this offseason. It is on his non-throwing hand and he has been able to stay on track in Tigers camp by having teammates catch return throws. On Tuesday, he tossed a normal bullpen session without even using a protective L screen. The veteran left-hander should be ready to make his Grapefruit League debut around early to mid March as he aims to crack the Tigers Opening Day roster as either a starter or reliever.

Splint Will Remain On Travis Wood's Hand

Updating a previous report, the splint will remain on Detroit Tigers pitcher Travis Wood's right index finger, and manager Ron Gardenhire said it will be a while before Wood can catch a baseball. While the injury is to his non-throwing hand, it doesn't help his chances of winning a roster spot. The veteran southpaw can be a swingman for the rebuilding Tigers, but he shouldn't be on anyone's fantasy radar in 2018.

Travis Wood Undergoing X-Rays

Detroit Tigers pitcher Travis Wood (finger) is undergoing X-rays on his broken right index finger Friday, and he may get his splint off if it has healed properly. Wood will be a swingman for a rebuilding Tigers team, and he should have plenty of time to heal before the start of the regular season, especially since his finger injury is to his non-throwing hand. The lefty should be avoided in all fantasy leagues after posting an ugly 6.80 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and just 65 strikeouts in 94 innings in 39 outings (14 starts) with the Royals and Padres last year.

Travis Wood Suffers Bizarre Injury

Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Travis Wood had a pin inserted into his right index finger after an early-January bow-hunting accident. Wood got his hand caught as he was prepping a crossbow and told reporters Wednesday morning that it nearly snapped his right index finger in two. The good news is he is a left-handed pitcher and is already scheduled to get his cast off Thursday. This should have no real effect on Wood's chances of claiming a spot on the Tigers' Opening Day roster this spring. The veteran southpaw signed a minor league contract with Detroit on January 29.

Tigers Sign Travis Wood

The Detroit Tigers signed free-agent pitcher Travis Wood to a minor league deal Monday, according to the Tigers. In 39 games (14 starts) for the Royals and Padres in 2017, Wood boasted an ugly 6.80 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and only 65 strikeouts in 94 innings. the soon-to-be 31-year-old southpaw doesn't have much left at the major league level, although he could compete for a rotation spot with the rebuilding Tigers. Wood is an arm to avoid in all leagues, even if he's in a starting spot to start the year.

Travis Wood Released

After being designated for assignment earlier in the week, the San Diego Padres have released pitcher Travis Wood. Between the Royals and Padres this past season, Wood pitched to a 6.80 ERA in 39 games, 14 of which were starts. The Padres will owe Wood $6.5 million this season, which will allow another club to sign him to a league-minimum contract.
