Tyler Thornburg Lands On Injured List With Elbow Sprain

Cincinnati Reds right-handed pitcher Tyler Thornburg was placed on the 10-day injured list prior to Fridays contest against the Cardinals due to a sprained right elbow. Thornburg had begun to carve out a niche for himself among the Reds relief corps with 10 strikeouts in seven innings, even as returning righties leapfrogged him in leverage situations. The ailment likely zaps any fantasy intrigue that Thornburg may have had in deep season-long formats over the final two-plus weeks as he looks to remain a cog in the bullpen heading into 2021.

Christian Colon DFA’d, Tyler Thornburg Called Up

The Cincinnati Reds have designated infielder Christian Colon for assignment, using his roster spot to bring up right-handed pitcher Tyler Thornburg to join a rocky bullpen. Colons path to playing time was about to be severely hampered when Mike Moustakas(quad), who is set to be activated off the injured list Sunday, returns. The Reds bullpen needs as many healthy and effective arms as it can get, as it boasts a 6.45 ERA entering play Friday, the fourth-lowest mark in the Majors. Neither Colon nor Thornburg has much season-long intrigue at this stage.

Red Sox Release Tyler Thornburg

The Boston Red Sox announced Wednesday that they have outright released reliever Tyler Thornburg. The 30-year-old had recently exhausted his 30-day rehab limit with Triple-A Pawtucket. Over his rehab, he posted a 12.66 ERA in 10 2/3 innings. When in Boston, he was also dreadful with a 7.71 ERA in 18 2/3 innings this season. Thornburg came to the Red Sox from Milwaukee in the 2016 Travis Shaw deal and never quite lived up to the expectations. As the team continues to yearn for useful bullpen arms, it's not surprising to see the 30-year-old let go. For now, continue to look towards Matt Barnes, Ryan Brasier, Brandon Workman, and soon Nathan Eovaldi as viable options in the Red Sox bullpen.

Tyler Thornburg Placed on Injured List

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Tyler Thornburg (hip) has been placed on the 10-day injured list. Thornburg is dealing with a hip impingement, but owns a 7.71 ERA this season. He hasn't pitched well this season, so the Red Sox may take their time with him. Right-handed relief pitcher Travis Lakins has been added to the active roster in a corresponding move.

Tyler Thornburg Could Have Shot At Closer Role

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Tyler Thornburg (shoulder), who was shut down last September due to complications from thoracic outlet syndrome, could be a wild card in the team's bullpen this year. His injury in 2018 led to him allowing 15 earned runs in just 24 innings all year. The hard-throwing right hasn't been healthy since 2015, but the Red Sox are talking about him being a solution in the ninth inning. They are expected to lose last year's closer Craig Kimbrel in free agency. Matt Barnes and Ryan Brasier might be the favorites for closing chances right now, but Thornburg might have the most upside if he's healthy. Heath Hembree could also be a candidate for a late-inning role. Thornburg is already throwing five to six times a week in anticipation of earning a roster spot this spring. Barnes is probably your best bet if you're speculating for saves late in drafts, but this bullpen could still change barring a free-agent signing.

Tyler Thornburg Likely to Be Activated Tuesday or Wednesday

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Tyler Thornburg (shoulder) is likely to be activated from the disabled list Tuesday or Wednesday. Thornburg had surgery last June and has been fairly underwhelming in his rehab outings. It is likely that Thornburg probably will not be vaulted into any high-leverage situations right away. As a non-closer relief pitcher that is coming off major shoulder surgery, Thornburg should not be owned in fantasy.

Tyler Thornburg Has Ugly Showing In Rehab Game

Boston Red Sox reliever Tyler Thornburg, who hasn't pitched in the majors since 2016, had a rough day with Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday as he continues his rehab from a shoulder injury. He only threw eight of his 19 pitches for strikes and was only able to retire one of the four batters he faced, giving up a home run in the process. Thornburg still has a ways to go before returning to Boston's bullpen and may likely never regain the high-leverage role that Boston hoped he would step into when they traded Travis Shaw to Milwaukee for him. Back in 2016 with the Brewers, Thornburg posted 13 saves while striking out 90 batters in 67 innings.

Tyler Thornburg Hits 95 mph In First Rehab Start At Triple-A

Boston Red Sox reliever Tyler Thornburg (shoulder) had a successful first rehab appearance at Triple-A Pawtucket, according to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. Thornburg allowed one hit in one inning while striking out three batters. Thornburg struck out two batters with the curveball and one with the fastball. It was also a good sign that Thornburg worked between 92-95 mph. There is no timetable set for Thornburg, so leave him on the waiver wire.

Tyler Thornburg Starts Rehab Assignment On Monday

Boston Red Sox reliever Tyler Thornburg (shoulder) will start a rehab assignment on Monday at Triple-A Pawtucket, according to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. Thornburg continues to work his way back from thoracic outlet surgery. Manager Alex Cora is positive about the progress thus far. Cora stated, "The fact that he will be pitching tomorrow is great for him". Despite positive news, Thornburg doesn't need to be owned in any league.
