Whit Merrifield News
Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Whit Merrifield (rest) is out of the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Cleveland Guardians. This is the second rest day this week for the 31-year-old slugger. Clearly, Merrifield isn't a fixture in the lineup like he was with Kansas City. It's also worth noting that Merrifield is having a down year at the plate. Santiago Espinal will start at second base while Raimel Tapia covers center field for Saturday's game against right-hander Triston McKenzie.
Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Whit Merrifield (rest) is out of the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. Fantasy managers don't need to panic as this appears to be a routine day off for Merrifield. Raimel Tapia is starting in his place in center field and batting seventh against right-hander Dean Kremer. Tapia has been fairly decent this season, but doesn't have great streaming appeal. Fantasy managers should expect Merrifield back in the lineup for their next contest.
Toronto Blue Jays second baseman/outfielder Whit Merrifield is making his debut with the team on Thursday against Minnesota Twins right-hander Sonny Gray, starting in center field and hitting eighth in the batting order. The Toronto Sun's Rob Longley is reporting that Merrifield is now vaccinated against COVID-19, so he'll be able to play for the team when they return home to Canada. The 33-year-old is in center field with George Springer (elbow) being eased back into the lineup due to an elbow issue. Most of Merrifield's playing time with his new squad will come at second base. Hitting near the bottom of the order isn't ideal for his fantasy managers, but Merrifield should have a better shot at racking up counting stats in Toronto. He's currently hitting .240/.290/.352 with six home runs, 42 RBI, 51 runs scored and 15 stolen bases in 383 at-bats in 2022.

Whit Merrifield was in the midst of a down year with the Royals before he was traded to the Blue Jays and while his numbers improved in Toronto, his playing time dropped leaving concerns he won't be a full-time player in 2023. Merrifield hit .240/.290/.352 with six homers, 42 RBI, 51 runs and 15 steals in 95 games (420 plate appearances) for the Royals then hit .281/.323/.446 with .281/.323/.446 with five homers 16 RBI, 19 runs and one steal in 44 games (130 plate appearances) with the Blue Jays. The days of 40 stolen bases appear to be gone and at 34 years old, it's likely Merrifield's best seasons are behind him. But he still ranked in the 84th percentile for sprint speed and continues to put the ball in play, with a 15.5% K% (85th percentile). On paper, Merrifield should be the Blue Jays primary second baseman in 2023 but they didn't seem too set on that after trading for him last year. With an ADP of ~191, Merrifield doesn't need to steal 40 bases or be an ironman to provide fantasy value, as long as he hits as well as he did following the trade and the Blue Jays don't sit him more than once a week.
