Yonny Chirinos News
The Tampa Bay Rays placed right-hander Yonny Chirinos (elbow) on the 60-day injured list on Friday to make room for outfielder Luke Raley, whom the Rays acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Chirinos had Tommy John surgery in August of 2020 and is also recovering from surgery last September to fix a broken elbow. The valuable swing man is unlikely to be ready until closer to midseason, so he isn't fantasy relevant in spring drafts. The 28-year-old made just three starts for Tampa in 2021. Chirinos has been effective in his three seasons with the Rays, posting a 3.65 ERA and 1.59 WHIP with 199 strikeouts and 57 walks in 234 1/3 innings over 47 outings (28 starts).
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Yonny Chirinos (elbow) has undergone Tommy John surgery and his season is now over. The typical recovery time for Tommy John surgery is 12-15 months and it will be a while before the 26-year-old returns to live action as manager Kevin Cash expects him to miss all of the 2021 season. Chirinos has been a reliable arm for the Rays and owns a career 3.65 ERA in 47 games (28 starts). Chirinos has operated more as an opener than a traditional starter and there is no clear replacement for him.
Tampa Bay Rays right-handed pitcher Yonny Chirinos most recent stint on the injured list will be even longer than originally anticipated. Manager Kevin Cash revealed Friday that Chirinos will need to undergo Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow, which will not only end his 2020 season, but 2021 as well. Chirinos has proven himself valuable in any role to Tampa Bay over the past three years, compiling a 3.65 ERA in 47 appearances (28 starts). In the short-term, the team is tabbing Josh Fleming to make a start this weekend against Toronto. Owners in all season-long formats can drop Chirinos to the wire and anticipate a comeback at the start of the 2022 year.
