Zack Short Inks Minor-League Deal With Houston

According to Chandler Rome of The Athletic, the Houston Astros have signed infielder Zack Short to a minor league deal that includes an invite to spring training. Short logged 42 games in the major leagues last summer with three different clubs. He held an overall .129/.282/.171 with three doubles and two stolen bases. He posted an impressive 15.9% walk rate but generated a poor .271 xwOBA. Across 29 games at Triple-A last season, the infielder posted a .216/.316/.273 line with three doubles and a 19:27 BB:K ratio. Fantasy managers should expect Short to compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster but will likely spend most of the 2025 season at Triple-A, given his lack of offensive production in the major leagues.

Braves Acquire Zack Short From Red Sox

The Atlanta Braves acquired infielder Zack Short from the Boston Red Sox on Thursday in exchange for cash considerations. The move comes after the Braves shipped veteran infielder Luis Guillorme to the Los Angeles Angels for cash considerations on the same day. The 28-year-old Short will be on his third MLB team of the year after starting the season with the New York Mets. In 12 games with the Mets and Red Sox this year, he's gone 1-for-16 with two walks and eight strikeouts. Short will operate in a utility bench role in Atlanta and may not stick around for long there, either. The former 17th-round pick by the Chicago Cubs in 2016 out of Sacred Heart has hit just .169/.262/.299 with 13 home runs, 55 RBI and eight stolen bases in 189 career games played in the majors since debuting in 2021.

Red Sox Acquire Zack Short From Mets

The Boston Red Sox acquired infielder Zack Short from the New York Mets on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations. Short finds a new home in the American League after the Mets designated him for assignment recently. Because the 28-year-old utility infielder is out of minor-league options, he'll join Boston's big-league roster for the time being as infield depth. The former 17th-round pick by the Chicago Cubs in 2016 out of Sacred Heart University has the ability to play shortstop, second base and third base. Before being DFA'd, Short appeared in 10 games for the Mets this year and went 1-for-9 at the plate with two walks and four strikeouts. He's a career .172/.266/.304 hitter in four big-league seasons and is off the fantasy radar.

Zack Short Moving Up To Leadoff Spot Tuesday

Detroit Tigers utility player Zack Short will move up to the leadoff spot Tuesday night when he takes on Kansas City Royals left-hander Daniel Lynch. The Tigers are stacking right-handed bats on Tuesday with all nine of their starters swinging from the right side. Normally regarded as a glove-first player, Short has had a solid season at the plate with a .253 average, three homers, one steal, and a .723 OPS across 88 trips to the plate. He does his best work against lefties as he is hitting .333 with a .991 OPS against southpaws this season, although he still owns a modest .632 OPS in his career against lefties. However, Short's improvement at the plate this season makes him a nice streaming/DFS option, especially out of the leadoff spot on Tuesday.

Tigers Option Zack Short To Triple-A

The Detroit Tigers optioned shortstop Zack Short to Triple-A Toledo on Saturday. Detroit looks set around the infield with Jeimer Candelario at third base, Javier Baez at shortstop, Jonathan Schoop at second base, and Spencer Torkelson the favorite to get the lion's share of the plate appearances at first base, but Short had a shot at making the Opening Day roster as a bench infielder. Instead, he'll head to Toledo for now. In 184 plate appearances with Detroit last season, the infielder hit .141 with a .239 on-base percentage, six home runs, and a pair of stolen bases. Short also registered a 12% walk rate.

Zack Short Homers In Second Straight Game

Detroit Tigers shortstop Zack Short helped the team complete a four-game sweep of the Texas Rangers on Thursday. Short went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's win. He has now homered in back-to-back games and he has a total of five home runs over 26 games on the year. Short has been the team's primary shortstop since late June. He's been hitting low in the order and he's batting just .192, but he's shown some promising flashes here and there.

Zack Short Hits His Third Home Run On Saturday

Detroit Tigers shortstop Zack Short had a strong offensive game in Saturday's 9-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins. He went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Short is slashing .224/.369/.449 with three home runs, 10 RBI and eight runs over 18 games in the majors this year. He's bounced between the MLB and Triple-A multiple times this year, but he's been a mainstay in the starting lineup over the past week. The 26-year-old has shown more promise for his glove than his bat during his minor league career. Even if he sticks in the majors after the All-Star break, he isn't the most enticing target for fantasy managers.

Zack Short Continues To Get On Base

Detroit Tigers shortstop Zack Short has continued to produce as a member of the Major League club. Since being recalled by the Tigers on June 26, Short has hit .240 with a .364 on-base percentage in 33 plate appearances while also adding a pair of home runs and seven RBI. The batting average isn't ideal, but Short has some upside in leagues where on-base percentage is part of the scoring. He already has a 22.4% walk rate in 49 plate appearances with Detroit this year and routinely registered double-digit walk rates in the minors. The Tigers don't really have a set starter at shortstop and could trade fellow infielder Jonathan Schoop in the coming weeks, so Short is someone to keep an eye on as a potential stash candidate in deeper leagues.

Zack Short Remaining On Active Roster

Detroit Tigers shortstop Zack Short was called up from Triple-A to serve as the team's 27th man for their doubleheader against the Houston Astros on Saturday. After the game, the team announced that Short would remain on the active roster while fellow infielder Isaac Paredes was optioned to Triple-A. Short started both games of the doubleheader. In Game 1, he went 2-for-2 with a double and a home run. Short should see a decent amount of playing time to help fill in for Niko Goodrum (finger). This is Short's third trip to the majors already this year. The first two were brief. Over seven games in the majors this year, he's slashing .313/.476/.563 while his Triple-A slash line this year over 28 games is .221/.395/.453.

Zack Short Draws Two Walks In MLB Debut

Detroit Tigers shortstop Zack Short made his MLB debut in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Short went 0-for-1 with two walks at the plate. He earned a great deal of praise from Tigers manager A.J. Hinch, who particularly raved about his defense. Hinch said, "He will always be at the right place at the right time." Short played third base in the game and made multiple impressive plays. He looked surprisingly comfortable in spite of it being an extremely cold day in Detroit. We don't know how long he's going to be sticking with the big league club at this point, but if he does, he's someone worth keeping an eye on for deep league and AL-only league managers.
