New York Giants quarterback Alex Tanney, who threw just 15 passes in two games over his nine-year NFL career, is retiring from the NFL on Tuesday. The 33-year-old re-signed on Jan. 4 and had spent most of the last three seasons as a backup to Eli Manning and Daniel Jones. He entered the league as a rookie free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2012 and also had short stints with the Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans (twice), Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts before joining the G-Men in 2018. Tanney replaced Manning in 2019 when he made the final start and appearance of his career. He spent all of the 2020 season on New York's practice squad.
Alex Tanney, Kyle Lauletta Duke It Out For No. 3 Job
New York Giants quarterback Alex Tanney appears to be on track for the No. 3 job after a strong spring. Tanney and Daniel Jones split the second-team reps during minicamp and organized team activities (OTAs), while Lauletta only saw third-team reps with Tanney. The fourth-round pick in 2018, Lauletta looks to be on the outside looking in for a roster spot heading into training camp and the preseason. Whomever wins the No. 3 job, they still have no fantasy appeal unless disaster strikes and injuries claim both Eli Manning and Jones.
The Tennessee Titans released quarterback Alex Tanney and running back Khalfani Muhammad on Monday. Tanney has been with Tennessee for parts of three seasons, beginning in 2014. He went 10-for-14 for 99 yards and a touchdown in one game in 2015. With the team drafting quarterback Luke Falk in the sixth round, Tanney became expendable.
