Former Indianapolis Colts safety Clayton Geathers, who opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 and to get 100 percent healthy, intends to play again in 2020, according to his new agent Chris Coy. Geathers was a free agent last year and will remain on the open market as the new league year approaches on Wednesday, March 17. He was a fourth-round pick by the Colts in 2015 and spent the first five seasons of his career in Indianapolis. Geathers missed significant time in 2016 and 2017 with a serious neck injury, but he returned to play 15 games in 2019 and recorded 54 total tackles, an interception and one pass defended. In 56 career games (34 starts), he has 10 passes defensed.
The Indianapolis safety is considered a solid run defender, and the Colts have a glaring need at linebacker. Nothing is certain yet, but the team has sounded open to the idea. They even experimented with the idea last season, moving Clayton Geathers to linebacker for the Green Bay game. The situation bears monitoring for IDP fantasy players, as a full-time move to linebacker would create many more tackle opportunities. Players like Landon Collins and Mark Barron are ostensibly defensive backs but really play closer to the line of scrimmage and act more like linebackers. It's no coincidence that Collins and Barron led all defensive backs in tackles last season. There's no guarantee Geathers would perform as well, but a sizable jump in production could be expected.
