Donovan Smith Expected To Play On Wild-Card Weekend

Kansas City Chiefs left tackle Donovan Smith (neck) suffered a neck injury in the Week 13 loss to the Green Bay Packers. He has not been able to suit up since, but head coach Andy Reid said he could be available on Saturday against the Miami Dolphins. Barring any setbacks, the Chiefs will get back Patrick Mahomes' blindside protector. With Miami suffering a ton of injuries to edge rushers in recent weeks, Smith could face easy matchups and ease back into full-speed reps. Smith has over 130 NFL starts to his name, so he could provide a significant boost as the Chiefs look to get back to the Super Bowl.

Donovan Smith To Start At Left Tackle

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed on Monday that offensive tackle Donovan Smith will head into offseason workouts as the team's starting left tackle. "He's been a left tackle at a high level. He's a good player. He'll be with the left side with the ones. Jawaan Taylor will move over to the right," Reid said. This was the expectation when the Chiefs signed Smith to a one-year, $9 million contract last Wednesday. Smith will have a pretty important job, protecting All-Pro quarterback Patrick Mahomes' blind side in his first year in Kansas City in 2023.

Donovan Smith Signs One-Year Deal With Chiefs

Veteran free-agent offensive tackle Donovan Smith signed with the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday on a one-year deal worth up to $9 million, according to a source. Smith is now expected to play left tackle and protect quarterback Patrick Mahomes' blind side in 2023, with Jawaan Taylor likely to move over to the right side of the offensive line. The 29-year-old Smith was originally a second-round pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015, and he spent the first eight years of his NFL career playing for the Bucs before signing with the Chiefs. He has started a total of 124 games in his career, although he only played in 13 games in 2022 due to elbow and foot injuries. Smith was pivotal for Tampa's offense when they won the Super Bowl over the Chiefs in the 2020 season.

Buccaneers Release Donovan Smith

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers officially released left tackle Donovan Smith on Tuesday, according to a source. Cutting Smith saves the Bucs $9.95 million against the 2023 salary cap. It's a move that doesn't come as much of a surprise as the team looks to get under the 2023 salary cap following the retirement of future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady. The 29-year-old Smith, who was a former second-round pick, spent the last eight seasons with Tampa as their left tackle, but he'll be continuing his career elsewhere after playing in a career-low 13 games due to injury in 2022.

Bucs Expected To Part Ways With Donovan Smith

Tampa Bay Buccaneers left tackle Donovan Smith is expected to be released. With Leonard Fournette cutting ties with Tampa, parting ways with Smith is another way the organization can clear some much-needed cap space. The 29-year-old was selected by the Bucs in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft and has been a vital component of the protection unit, including helping the team defeat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV. However, he struggled last season, allowing six sacks. Nevertheless, Smith likely won't be unemployed long, as more than a few teams should be interested in his services.

Donovan Smith Could Be A Cap Casualty

Tampa Bay Buccaneers left tackle Donovan Smith could be a salary cap casualty this offseason after not playing well in 2022 while playing through injuries. The Buccaneers are in one of the worst cap situations in the league and are currently $55 million over the salary cap. If the team moves on from Smith, the most likely fix would be to move Tristan Wirfs to left tackle. The Bucs would free up $9.95 million if they cut him before June 1, while they'd save $15.25 million as a post-June 1 cut. The 29-year-old former second-rounder in 2015 played in a career-low 13 games this past season and could be on his way out after eight seasons with the team.

Donovan Smith Won't Play In Week 2

Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive tackle Donovan Smith (elbow) has been ruled out for the Week 2 matchup against the New Orleans Saints. This Bucs o-line continues to lose starters, which could impact their offensive success. Luckily, Tristan Wirfs (abdomen) is expected to play despite dealing with an injury. Josh Wells is expected to fill in for Smith for this Sunday's contest. He allowed two pressures on 19 pass-blocking reps last season. The Bucs will likely lean on the running game with their wide receivers banged up. Leonard Fournette could be in for a big game, assuming this o-line can hold up.

Donovan Smith Suffers Hyperextended Elbow

Tampa Bay Buccaneers left tackle Donovan Smith (elbow) suffered a hyperextended elbow in the Week 1 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. It will be a pain-tolerance issue as to how quickly he'll be able to return, according to head coach Todd Bowles. The good news is that the Buccaneers and quarterback Tom Brady might not have to be without the 29-year-old left tackle for too long, if at all. Josh Wells replaced Smith at left tackle on Sunday night and would likely start any games that Smith misses. In a divisional matchup on the road against the New Orleans Saints in Week 2, Brady could face quite a bit of pressure from his blind side if Wells is forced to make the start.

Donovan Smith Ruled Out On Sunday Night

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers left tackle Donovan Smith (elbow) has been ruled out for the rest of the Sunday night game in Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys with an elbow injury. Smith was injured in the second quarter of the game when he allowed a sack of quarterback Tom Brady. It remains to be seen how serious the injury is, but this is more bad news for an already banged up Buccaneers offensive line. Josh Wells replaced Smith at left tackle, so this is a downgrade on Brady's blind side for the rest of this contest and moving forward if Smith is unable to go in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints on the road.

Donovan Smith Questionable To Return With Elbow Injury

Tampa Bay Buccaneers left tackle Donovan Smith (elbow) exited the team's Week 1 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys in the first half. His return is currently questionable. Anything significant would be a tough blow to the Bucs' offensive line which is already struggling with injuries. Tampa Bay holds a 12-3 lead at halftime and will hope to get their starting lineman back for the second half.
