Browns Fire Head Coach Freddie Kitchens

The Cleveland Browns announced on Sunday that they have fired head coach Freddie Kitchens. Kitchens went 6-10 in his lone season in charge of the team. It was a disappointing year for a team that had playoff aspirations during training camp. Instead, multiple players appeared to have issues with Kitchens, most notably Odell Beckham Jr. who reportedly wanted out of Cleveland during the season. Kitchens' play-calling on offense, which was supposed to be one of his strengths, also left much to be desired. When Cleveland hires the next man to lead the team, he will be the seventh head coach since Jimmy Haslam bought the team back in 2012.

Freddie Kitchens On His Way Out Of Cleveland?

The Cleveland Browns have been doing due diligence and making calls on potential new head coaches for 2020, which is a bad sign for current head coach Freddie Kitchens. The Browns have flopped in 2019 in Kitchens' first year as the top dog in Cleveland. They are 6-9 and in third place in the AFC North heading into Week 17 against the one-win Bengals. Other than receiver Jarvis Landry, most of the offense has struggled under Kitchens' watch this year, and he's also had sideline dustups with Landry, Odell Beckham Jr. and David Njoku. This roster is ripe with talent and could contend next season, but it's looking like Kitchens won't be the guy to lead them.

Browns Likely to Stick With Freddie Kitchens

According to a report by NFL's Ian Rapoport, the Cleveland Browns plan to retain Freddie Kitchens as their head coach after the season ends. Kitchens has gone through some growing pains as a first-time head coach, struggling with play calling at times while trying to manage some big egos in the Cleveland locker room. Despite the rough year, Kitchens is said to have support from the front office barring a late-season disaster. In what has seemed like a lost season at times, Kitchens and the Browns still have a chance to finish with a winning record, which would be just the third time that has happened since the team came back in 1999.

Freddie Kitchens Won't Give Up Play-Calling Duties

Cleveland Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens said he's not considering giving up offensive play-calling duties after the team's Sunday night loss to the Rams in Week 3. The Browns are 1-2 and are averaging 16.3 points per game after three weeks. "It's me. It's my fault. Todd does a great job. Todd does a great job during the course of the week of making sure we stay on task. We stay organized and all that kind of stuff. But when things mess up it's going to be me," Kitchens said. It won't get any easier in Week 4 on the road against Baltimore's defense. The biggest thing is getting quarterback Baker Mayfield going. His completion percentage has dropped each week of the season and he has three touchdowns to five interceptions while taking 11 sacks in three weeks.

Browns Hiring Freddie Kitchens As Head Coach

The Cleveland Browns will hire Freddie Kitchens to be the 18th head coach in franchise history on Wednesday, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Kitchens served as the offensive coordinator for the final eight games of the season after the team fired head coach Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley. Once Kitchens was running the offense, the team really took off and rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield excelled. Mayfield was 5-3, completed 68.4 percent of his passes and had 19 touchdowns, eight interceptions and five sacks after Kitchens took over. The Kitchens hire is good news for everyone involved in Cleveland's offense for 2019 and beyond.
