Christine Michael, Ty Montgomery and James Starks Likely to Split Carries in RB Conundrum
The running back situation in Green Bay has devolved into a complete mess. When Green Bay takes on the Seahawks in Week 14, the Packers are likely to give an equal share of the carries to three equally flawed running backs. Christine Michael has shown that he can be an effective every-down back, but Mike McCarthy still doesn't fully trust his knowledge of the offense. Ty Montgomery has looked like a dynamic runner, but Green Bay seems concerned that he won't hold up if he gets more than seven carries. James Starks knows the offense and can physically hold up, but has been slow and ineffective carrying the ball. None of these players are going to get enough looks to be worth starting, even as a flex.
James Starks Faces Competition for Touches; Not a Good Start for Week 12
James Starks has had a productive two weeks since returning from injury. However, that run is likely coming to an end. Christine Michael will be making his debut for Green Bay when they travel to Philadelphia for Week 12. In addition to another body to compete with over carries, Starks will be going up against a dominant Eagles' front seven. You should leave Starks on your bench this week. Unless there is another injury, it is hard to see how Starks will have much value going forward.
James Starks Will Have High Usage; Low Effectiveness
While James Starks has been a very valuable player to Green Bay throughout his career, he has looked washed up. This year Starks has averaged 2.4 yards per carry. It is unclear why Green Bay is comfortable taking snaps away from Ty Montgomery and giving them to Starks, but that is what has happened. Fortunately, by next week Starks should largely be replaced in the offense by the recently acquired Christine Michael. Until that happens, Starks is likely to receive enough carries to at least be worth a fleeting fantasy consideration. If bye weeks or injuries are leaving you desperate, you can be confident that Starks will put up at least some points in Week 11. He should be viewed as a low-end flex play for Week 11.
James Starks Misses Practice; Should not be Started in Week 6
With the injury to Eddie Lacy, there were expectations that James Starks would play a significant role in The Packers's game plan for Week 6. However, Starks injured his knee on Tuesday and has missed practice. He is also dealing with a death in the family that will cause him to be absent from Packers' facilities until Sunday. James Starks has been ineffective in the few opportunities he has seen so far this year. The potential for additional touches due to Lacy's injury made Starks an interesting waiver pickup this week, but at this point it is more likely that Lacy plays than Starks does. Even if Starks is active, he should not be started.
James Starks Doesn’t Figure to get Much Usage; Just a Handcuff
Last year, with Eddie Lacy struggling, James Starks got more touches than he had received in years. It made him a valuable fantasy commodity. But this year appears to be more like the years previous to 2015. Starks was out touched by Lacy 15-5. He isn't getting consistent 3rd down back snaps. Unless there is an injury to Lacy, don't expect much production from him. He should only be rostered as a handcuff and should be benched in everything but the deepest of leagues.
