Packers Claim James Turner From The Lions
The Green Bay Packers claimed kicker James Turner off waivers from the division-rival Detroit Lions on Thursday. Turner will stay in the NFC North and head to Green Bay now after the Lions signed Turner as an undrafted free agent shortly after this year's draft. Given Anders Carlson's struggles with the Packers in 2023 in his rookie season, the team wants to make sure he has plenty of competition in training camp and the preseason as he heads into his second year in the NFL. In addition to Turner, the Packers also have veteran Greg Joseph in the fold to push Carlson. The 23-year-old Turner, who played his college ball at Michigan, essentially replaces Jack Podlesny, who the Packers waived on Wednesday. Turner made 18 of his 21 field-goal tries in 2023 for the Wolverines and set a single-season Michigan record with 65 successful extra points.
