The Cleveland Browns cut wide receiver Jeff Janis on Friday. Janis wasn't expected to make the final 53-man roster, so this doesn't come as much of a surprise. The 27-year-old had only 17 catches for 200 yards and one touchdown in his four seasons with the Packers.
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jeff Janis is a cut candidate with rosters being trimmed down this weekend. Janis stood out in the playoffs with the Packers but has just 17 catches for 200 yards and one touchdown in the regular season in his four years in the NFL.
The Cleveland Browns and free-agent wide receiver Jeff Janis have agreed to a contract. Janis, a former Green Bay Packer, is expected to slide in as the team's No. 4 receiver after Josh Gordon, Jarvis Landryand Corey Coleman. From a fantasy standpoint, it isn't a great landing spot for the fifth-year pass catcher. That being said, there have been some rumors that the team may try to trade Coleman this offseason, which would benefit Janis. Janis caught 17 passes for 200 yards and one touchdown in 51 games with the Packers. From a real football standpoint, Janis is an excellent special teams player who will help Cleveland significantly in that aspect of the game.
Coaches Praise Jeff Janis; Don’t Believe the Hype
Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy took time during Thursday's press conference to praise wide receiver Jeff Janis as both a special teams player and as a wide receiver. Despite the encouraging words, you shouldn't buy into any hype about Janis. If Janis makes the team it will be purely for his ability as a gunner on special teams. Janis has good size and speed but has difficulty catching balls thrown over his shoulder which severely limits his ability as a deep threat. He also lacks the hip flexibility to create separation on short and intermediate routes. Just about the only route that Janis runs well is a deep comeback route, so his potential as a WR is limited. He is an excellent special teams player, but as a WR is at best seventh on the depth chart behind Trevor Davis and Malachi Dupre. Do not draft Jeff Janis.
Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jeff Janis, who is entering the final year of his rookie deal, isn't expected to develop into much more at this point in his career, in the opinion of USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin's Ryan Wood. Janis has only caught 15 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown in three seasons, but he could still win a roster spot at the bottom of Green Bay's receiver depth chart. The wideout is a known commodity as a gunner on punt coverage and a kick returner, which may give him a leg up for one of the final jobs. He's not worth your time in fantasy drafts.
