Kellen Mond News
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond is having a good spring this offseason. "Kellen's having a good spring so far, working incredibly hard, digesting the system. He made a couple checks yesterday at the LOS that he wasn't prepared play by play for...he just instinctively did it. Those are the little things you look for," new head coach Kevin O'Connell said. The 22-year-old got into just one game as a rookie last year and went 2-for-3 for five yards in one series. With Kirk Cousins likely staying in Minnesota for at least a couple more seasons, Mond will work to become his direct backup in 2022. The Vikings also have Sean Mannion in their quarterback room.
Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback Kellen Mond and linebacker Anthony Barr (knee) have been ruled out for the Week 1 season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. Rookie left tackle Christian Darrisaw (groin) has also been ruled out. With Mond being a healthy inactive, it means that Sean Mannion will serve as Kirk Cousins' backup to kick off the 2021 season. Barr worked his way back from a torn pectoral muscle that he suffered in Week 2 of last year, but he's been dealing with a knee injury for more than a month. In Barr's place on Sunday, Blake Lynch should get the start at strongside linebacker. The Vikings defense should be much better than a year ago, but they are a low-end starting unit, at best, to open the season against a Bengals offense that has plenty of upside.
The Minnesota Vikings are waiving quarterback Jake Browning. In three preseason games, Browning completed 13-of-33 passes, throwing for 154 yards and one interception. RookieKellen Mond will be the backup for Kirk Cousins as of right now, though the Vikings may still be looking to sign another quarterback. During the preseason, Mond stood out, completing 28-of-51 passes and throwing for 310 yards and one interception. Neither quarterback threw a touchdown, but Mike Zimmer felt that Mond took advantage of his opportunity compared to Browning. Unless the Vikings become a late runner to sign Cam Newton or another veteran quarterback, Kirk Cousins will be the starter, and Kellen Mond will be the backup. The Vikings head to Cincinnati to take on the Bengals for their season opener.
