Philip Rivers News
Retired quarterback Philip Rivers said that he hasn't heard from the New Orleans Saints, but he would consider coming out of retirement to play for them if they were interested. Jameis Winston (knee) suffered a season-ending torn ACL in the Week 8 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Saints will have to choose between Taysom Hill (concussion) -- who has missed the last two games with a concussion -- or Trevor Siemian to lead their offense heading into a Week 9 matchup with the Atlanta Falcons. The 39-year-old Rivers has very little left, but he did throw 24 touchdowns to 11 interceptions with the Indianapolis Colts last year, and he might be an improvement over Hill/Siemian, at least in the passing game. This will probably amount to nothing, but it's an intriguing possibility if the Saints aren't sold on the Hill/Siemian combination.
Former Chargers and Colts quarterback Philip Rivers reportedly hasn't ruled out a midseason return to the NFL should a team be in need of a QB. Speculation surrounds a potential return to the Colts, who Rivers led to an 11-5 record and an AFC Playoff appearance last season. Should Rivers suit up for Indianapolis this season, it could mean big boosts to Michael Pittman Jr., T.Y. Hilton, and Jonathan Taylor. Taylor who finished as the RB5 in 2020 has seen his ADP has fallen in response to injuries to both Carson Wentz and Quenton Nelson. Rivers threw 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for Indianapolis last season.
Long-time San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers announced his retirement from football on Wednesday. Rivers went to the Chargers in a draft-day trade in 2004 and played for the Bolts for 16 seasons before spending his 17th and final NFL season with the Colts. He played in 244 games, starting the final 240 without missing a game, the second-longest streak by an NFL QB behind Brett Favre's 297. The 39-year-old finishes his career ranked fifth all-time with 63,440 passing yards and 421 touchdown passes. "I can sit here and say, 'I can still throw it. I love to play,'" Rivers said. "But that's always going to be there. I'm excited to go coach high school football." The future Hall of Famer topped 4,000 passing yards for the eighth straight season in 2020 and 12th time in his career.
