The Los Angeles Chargers waived place kicker Roberto Aguayo on Saturday, meaning Caleb Sturgis has won the job, according to ESPN's Field Yates. Aguayo was 3-for-3 on field goals in the preseason and was 6-for-6 on extra points. Sturgis went 2-for-3 on field goals and 2-for-2 on extra points. The kicking spot has been a sore spot for the Chargers in recent seasons, so hopefully Sturgis can bring some consistency to the position in 2018. The 29-year-old played in just one game for the Eagles last year due to injury. He made 35 of his 41 field goal attempts in 2016 and was four of six from 50-plus yards. Sturgis probably won't be drafted in standard-sized leagues, but he could be a waiver addition during the year.
Caleb Sturgis, Roberto Aguayo In Spirited Kicking Battle
Los Angeles Chargers place kickers Caleb Sturgis and Roberto Aguayo have been battling it out heading into the second preseason game this week. During full team drills on Wednesday, Sturgis made all seven of his field goal attempts with a long of 53 yards, while Aguayo made four of seven with two misses from 50-plus yards. The Bolts used four kickers in 2017 and made an NFL-worst 67 percent of their attempts. Its a long battle. Well see how it plays out in games, head coach Anthony Lynn said. What a player does in games, to me, is what I evaluate the most. Sturgis suffered a hip injury last year for the Eagles and didn't play, but Lynn said he looks fully healed from the injury. Aguayo struggled in his only season with the Bucs, missing nine of 31 attempts. Sturgis might have a leg up if he's healthy, but it'll all come down to who performs in preseason games. Whoever wins this job should be attractive to fantasy owners in an offense that could be quite good if they stay healthy.
Los Angeles Chargers kicker Roberto Aguayo is battling with Caleb Sturgis to be the man to fix the team's kicking problems, but he was only tasked with kick-offs and extra points in their first preseason game. That said, Aguayo couldn't have asked for the night to have gone much better. He was perfect on extra points, and Sturgis missed on one of his two easy field goals. Head coach Anthony Lynn hasn't indicated who the front-runner is or whether next week's game will feature any different usage amongst the two, but Aguayo seems to still be neck-and-neck with Sturgis at this point. Fantasy owners should probably avoid the both of them though.
After constant problems last year, the Los Angeles Chargers are looking for a kicker, and post-hype Roberto Aguayo may win the job. The Chargers have allowed Caleb Sturgis and Aguayo to battle it out during training camp, and Aguayo has actually proven to be more accurate so far. Sturgis missed the vast majority of 2017 with a hip injury before being released by the Eagles, and Aguayo famously wasn't able to live up to the hype that surrounded him after Tampa Bay drafted him in the second round in 2016. He was cut before the 2017 season and played in no regular season games last year. Whether either reclamation project can solve the Chargers kicking woes remains to be seen.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced they had cut kicker Roberto Aguayo. The former second round draft pick faced much scrutiny last year, after many misses, and ending the season with a 71% made field goal rate. Aguayo missed two field goals in last night's loss to the Bengals, which ultimately was the final straw for his short time with the Bucs'. The Bucs' infamously traded up into the second round to draft Aguayo last year, and he didn't live up to any of his All-American hype. The Bucs' brought in veteran Nick Folk in the off season, who now stands as the lone kicker on the Bucs' roster.
Roberto Aguayo misses two kicks in Buccaneers' loss
Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Roberto Aguayo missed two kicks last night in the Bucs' loss to the Bengals last night, continuing his struggles from last season. The Bucs' traded up in the second round of last years' draft to pick Aguayo and he ended the season with only a 71% completion rate on field goals. It was reported earlier in camp that Aguayo was having success at long range field goals. Aguayo is battling veteran Nick Folk for the starting spot during camp.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers place kicker Roberto Aguayo had what Coach Koetter described as his, "Best day of training camp, best day in a long time. He looked great today. Today, Roberto was money on both ends. I don't think he missed all day. Yeah, he was money." according to Scott Smith, Buccaneers.com. Aguayo had his struggles last year, only hitting on 71% of his field goals, which is low by modern NFL standards. The former first-round draft pick is battling veteran kicker Nick Folk for the starting job. Aguayo was seven of seven of seven for kick on Friday's practice including many from long range.
