Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn said that tight end Sean Culkin (Achilles) tore his Achilles in the Week 4 win over the Dolphins and is done for the year. Mostly a blocking tight end, Culkin will finish the year with just one catch for 12 yards, which came against Miami with Virgil Green inactive. Until Hunter Henry (knee) can return, Green and Lance Kendricks will do the blocking for the Bolts. Neither tight end has much fantasy appeal in an offense that will run through Melvin Gordon, Keenan Allen and Austin Ekeler moving forward.
Los Angeles Chargers tight end Sean Culkin received some high praise this week from star quarterback Philip Rivers. The likely third-string TE was singled out by Rivers for his willingness and ability to do anything on the field. Rivers told reporters, "[Culkin] just plays hard in whatever you need him to do. You want me to motion over and block an end? You want me to run a route? He's really had a nice offseason and a nice training camp." Culkin has made a living doing the dirty work as the extra body on the field most of the time, but with budding star Hunter Henry coming back from injury this year, Culkin's likely going to specialize in even more of the scut work.
The Los Angeles Chargers have been blessed with years of excellent tight end play, and second-year tight endSean Culkin is going to try to step into some very big shoes. Culkin is mostly known as a blocking tight end, but after Hunter Henry was lost for the season, Culkin was presented with a golden opportunity. Unfortunately, he's got plenty of competition at the spot between Virgil Green and Braedon Bowman. Culkin got off to the hot start by catching both passes sent his way in Week 1 while every other TE was shut out, but he's got a mountain to climb. If he can show some offensive skills again this week, he might shoot up the depth chart.
