Todd Bowles News
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hired former New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles as their next defensive coordinator on Tuesday. Head coach Bruce Arians also brought Byron Leftwich to be the pass-game coordinator and Harold Goodwin from his time with the Cardinals. Bowles led a very strong defense in Arizona when he was paired with Arians, and he will be tasked with getting Tampa's unit back in order after they were routinely diced up in 2018, mainly in the secondary. Tampa was 27th in yards allowed per game (383.4), 26th in passing yards allowed per game (259.4), 24th in rushing yards allowed per game (123.9) and 31st in points allowed per game (29.0) in 2018.
The New York Jets fired head coach Todd Bowles on Sunday following their blowout Week 17 loss to the Patriots after his fourth season with the team. Bowles finishes with a 24-40 record in his time with Gang Green after going 10-6 in his first year in 2015. The Jets will be overhauling their coaching staff in the offseason and also have roughly $106 million in salary cap space, so they will be looking to add plenty of weapons around quarterback Sam Darnold. Darnold, the No. 3 overall pick, had his ups and downs in his rookie year but should be able to improve with better weapons around him.
The New York Jets are not expected to make a decision on head coach Todd Bowles until after the season, according to sources. The Jets got embarrassed by the Bills in Week 10, losing 41-10 at home, so Bowles is firmly on the hot seat. Whether the team's brass thinks he can successfully develop rookie quarterback Sam Darnold in the long run will likely weigh heavily in their decision on whether to keep him around at the end of the season.
