Bears Cut Tommy Sweeney

The Bears cut tight end Tommy Sweeney on Saturday. He signed a deal with Chicago a few months ago after spending his entire career in Buffalo. The 29-year-old appeared in 24 contests for the Bills. However, he had just 18 catches for 165 yards and one touchdown. With Cole Kmet, Gerald Everett, and Marcedes Lewis on the roster, the Bears are set heading into the 2024-25 campaign. Regarding Sweeney's future, there's a chance he could at least earn a spot on another team throughout the National Football League. Yet, his fantasy value can't get any lower, nor will it improve anytime soon.

Tommy Sweeney Signs With Bears

Free-agent tight end Tommy Sweeney signed an undisclosed deal with the Chicago Bears on Sunday after a tryout at their rookie minicamp, according to a source. Sweeney was with the New York Giants most of last year but sat out after he collapsed and had a "medical event" on the practice field. The 28-year-old was originally drafted in the seventh round (228th overall) by the Buffalo Bills in 2019 out of Boston College. All three of his NFL seasons came with Buffalo, and Sweeney has caught a total of 18 passes for 165 yards and one touchdown on 26 targets in just 24 games played (four starts). Sweeney will be competing for a roster spot in training camp this summer among a tight end group in Chicago that already includes Cole Kmet, Gerald Everett, Stephen Carlson and rookie Brenden Bates.

Giants Signing Tommy Sweeney

The New York Giants are signing free-agent tight end Tommy Sweeney to an undisclosed deal on Thursday, according to a source. Sweeney is a former seventh-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2019 out of Boston College, and he spent the last three seasons playing for the Bills, where he totaled 18 catches on 26 targets for 165 yards and one touchdown in 24 games (four starts). The 27-year-old will provide the Giants with some depth at the position behind recently acquired Darren Waller and Daniel Bellinger. The G-Men also have tight ends Lawrence Cager and Chris Myarick on their current roster. Sweeney will be far from the fantasy radar in 2023.

Tommy Sweeney On The Roster Bubble

Buffalo Bills tight end Tommy Sweeney will likely stay on the 53-man roster for depth and locker-room reasons, but he could be vulnerable if the Bills need another roster spot for flexibility. Sweeney will be inactive on game days behind Dawson Knox and O.J. Howard, and he's right on the bubble heading into training camp in July. In his first two seasons with the Bills, the 26-year-old has 17 receptions on 25 targets for 158 yards and one touchdown in 19 games (four starts), and he'd need injuries to both Knox and Howard to become fantasy relevant in 2022.

Tommy Sweeney Barely Involved In Week 9

Buffalo Bills tight end Tommy Sweeney has taken over as the starter with Dawson Knox (hand) sidelined. Sadly, Sweeney has not been able to make the same impact as Knox. In Week 9, Sweeney hauled in both of his targets for 10 yards in the loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. It seems the targets have shifted from the tight end spot over to wide receiver Cole Beasley. It's obvious that the Bills don't trust Sweeney as much as they do Knox. That being said, Sweeney won't be anything more than a desperation deep league option going forward.

Tommy Sweeney - Week 9 Outlook for Fantasy Football

Buffalo Bills tight end Tommy Sweeney will get at least one more start with Dawson Knox (hand) sidelined for the Week 9 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Last week, Sweeney hauled in three of his four targets for 30 yards in the win. He is getting involved, but not at the same level that Knox was before the injury. Obviously, quarterback Josh Allen does not have the same chemistry with Sweeney. Fantasy managers should be able to find a better option than Sweeney. However, he does have some streaming appeal for desperate managers in deep leagues.

Tommy Sweeney Quiet In Week 8

Buffalo Bills tight end Tommy Sweeney put together his biggest game of the season against the Miami Dolphins in Week 8. The young tight end hauled in three of his four targets for 30 yards in the win. He has become the No. 1 option at tight end after Dawson Knox (hand) went down. However, the Bills have a stacked offense, so they don't need to involve Sweeney heavily into the gameplan. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect his workload to change and Sweeney shouldn't be much of an option against the Jaguars next week.

Tommy Sweeney Has Big Opportunity Ahead Of Him

With Buffalo Bills tight end Dawson Knox (hand) out several weeks with a broken hand, Tommy Sweeney has a big opportunity over the next couple of games. Knox is tied with Bengals tight end C.J. Uzomah for the most touchdowns (five) by a tight end this year and leads Buffalo in TDs. Sweeney, a seventh-rounder in 2019, caught his first career touchdown pass when Knox left the game in Week 6. He's primarily a blocking tight end, but he's caught all four of his targets this season. Sweeney had eight receptions for 114 yards in his rookie season and didn't play in 2020 due to a foot injury and a heart condition. Because Sweeney missed a year of development last year and doesn't have a ton of pass-catching experience, he'll likely only be a bye-week filler as a touchdown-dependent TE2 in Knox's absence. The Bills could also use more four-receiver sets.

Tommy Sweeney Wins Backup Role

Buffalo Bills tight end Tommy Sweeney will be the No. 2 tight end option for the team heading into the season. He saw limited action during his rookie season in 2019. Sadly, he missed all of the 2020 season due to a heart condition. Sweeney outplayed Jacob Hollister in training camp and won the backup role. However, Dawson Knox will remain the starting tight end in Buffalo. Honestly, neither of them are projected to do much with the Bills being stacked at wide receiver. It's unlikely that Sweeney has any kind of fantasy value while Knox is healthy.

Tommy Sweeney Done For The Season

Buffalo Bills tight end Tommy Sweeney (heart) will miss the rest of the season after a cardiologist discovered that he has myocarditis, which is a heart condition. Sweeney started the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list with a foot injury, and he was nearing a return when his condition was discovered during an NFL-mandated checkup. He was also placed on the COVID-19 list in Week 7 after being a high-risk close contact to teammate Dawson Knox, who tested positive for the virus. The 25-year-old caught eight passes for 114 yards in six games in his rookie season in 2019. Knox remains the team's top pass-catching tight end, with Lee Smith, rookie Reggie Gilliam and Tyler Kroft backing him up.
