Los Angeles Chargers tight end Tre' McKitty has been waived by the team on Tuesday. The Chargers drafted McKitty in the third round of the 2021 draft out of Georgia but he was never able to make much of an impact in Los Angeles. He is young enough and has the draft pedigree to latch on somewhere else, so all is not lost for the third-year tight end. It will continue to be Gerald Everett (hip) and Donald Parham Jr. operating as the main tight ends for the Chargers.
Los Angeles Chargers tight end Tre' McKitty posted three receptions for 21 yards on six targets in a Week 10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. McKitty was given an expanded role on Sunday night with Gerald Everett (groin) suffering an injury in the second quarter. His six targets marked a new career-high. Fantasy managers should monitor reports regarding Everett's availability for Week 11, but McKitty could be a streaming option against the Kansas City Chiefs if Everett, Mike Williams (ankle), and Keenan Allen (hamstring) are all inactive.
With Los Angeles Chargers tight end Jared Cook inactive in Week 17 due to COVID-19, rookie tight end Tre' McKitty saw a career-high three targets. McKitty made the most of those targets by catching all three and picking up 22 yards. The Georgia Bulldog alumni only had 23 yards and three receptions entering the contest, but it was nice to see the rookie active in his first game with extended snaps. With Cook and Donald Parham Jr. both set to become free agents in the offseason, the third-round pick could see an uptick in playing time next year and is a name for fantasy managers to file away at the tight end position for 2022.
The Los Angeles Chargers selected Georgia tight end Tre' McKitty with the No. 97 overall pick in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft on Friday night. The Chargers were looking to add another tight end after losing Hunter Henry in free agency. McKitty has strong hands and the ability to make tough catches in traffic and will give impressing young quarterback Justin Herbert yet another weapon in the passing game. Veteran Jared Cook will mostly block McKitty in his rookie season, but if he gets an opportunity at any point, he's one to watch. There is some fantasy intrigue in his future, but McKitty could also use some development. On top of all that, he was one of the best in-line blockers in this year's draft class and should help the running game, if nothing else.
