Vernon Butler Signs One-Year Deal To Join Las Vegas
Defensive tackle Vernon Butler is set to join the Raiders on a one-year pact, per Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network. Butler was limited to just 10 games (one start) last season with Buffalo and compiled 11 tackles and one quarterback hit in that span. A former first-round pick of the Panthers in 2016, Butler spent four years with Carolina before a two-season stint with the Bills. Like all of the AFC West defenses, the Raiders' unit faces an uphill battle to season-long fantasy viability due to the explosive offense that the entire division boasts. Butler may not move the needle, but he adds depth behind Kendal Vickers and Bilal Nichols at the defensive tackle spot.
The Buffalo Bills and defensive lineman Vernon Butler agreed to terms on a reduced deal on Wednesday, according to an informed source. Butler was set to have a $7.8 million salary cap hit in 2021 in the last of a two-year deal, according to Spotrac. He also had a dead-cap hit of $1 million, which made him a potential cap casualty. But instead of being cut, Butler took a pay cut, similar to what center Mitch Morse did earlier in the week to help the team save $2 million. In his first season in Buffalo last year, the 26-year-old defensive tackle had 18 combined tackles (five for loss), two QB hits, one pass defensed, one forced fumble and no sacks in 14 games. Butler became a rotational player toward the end of the season and will likely keep that same role heading into 2021.
The Buffalo Bills agreed to a two-year, $16 million deal with former Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Vernon Butler on Tuesday, according to a source. The deal can be worth up to as much as $18 million, and he'll take home $9.3 million in guarantees. The Bills also signed defensive end Quinton Jefferson to a two-year deal on Tuesday. An already strong defense will have some more help up the middle in Butler, Carolina's former first-round pick in 2016. The 25-year-old had a career-high 32 tackles (22 solo), seven tackles for loss, eight QB hits, six sacks and three forced fumbles in 14 games (nine starts) in 2019.
