Washington Capitals left wing Carl Hagelin has been ruled out indefinitely after undergoing left hip resurfacing surgery on Monday. He also had hip surgery in October and hasn't played a single minute this season. The newest procedure puts Hagelin's NHL career in doubt, as he's set to become an unrestricted free agent and will be 35 by the time next season rolls around. It's also unclear when Hagelin can begin hockey activities again. The Swedish winger, who won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 2016 and 2017, has been with Washington since February 2019. He has notched 66 points in 187 games with the team and has managed 110 goals and 186 assists in 713 games for his whole career.

His absence leaves Washington's frontline without another veteran, as fellow Swede Nicklas Backstrom is also recovering from hip surgery and Tom Wilson is working his way back from knee surgery. All the injuries are set to give Aliaksei Protas a top-six role for the start of the season.

The Swedish forward was injured during practice on Tuesday when he took a stick to the left eye. Capitals GM Brian MacLellan called the eye injury "serious" and Hagelin has been deemed out indefinitely. Fantasy managers who haven't already moved on from Hagelin should do so since he won't be back at any point this season.

His new linemates Lars Eller and T.J. Oshie tallied the assists on the play. Hagelin has been off form offensively for most of the season, but he's now registered three points in his past four outings. There's definitely more to come from him if he manages to solidify his place among the top six, and his current points tally (5) could double quite quickly.
