Johnny Gaudreau News
Columbus Blue Jackets winger Johnny Gaudreau is looking forward to working with new head coach Mike Babcock and believes that the team will have a bounce-back year. "He's been in this league for a long time," Gaudreau said about Babcock to Adam Kimelman of NHL.com. "He's going to come straightforward with what he wants and how he wants his team ran. It's what we need. We need that hard-nosed coach that's going to push us in practices and in games. I'm excited to get out there and start the season off with him, and I think we're going to have a good year this year." Columbus finished with the second-worst record in the league last season and the team's poor play also left a mark on Gaudreau's numbers, as the skillful winger completed his debut campaign in Ohio with only 74 points (21 goals, 53 assists) in 80 games. However, Gaudreau appears to be very confident that the 2023-24 campaign will be completely different for him and the team.
Columbus Blue Jackets left wing Johnny Gaudreau closed out the 2022-23 campaign with his 21st goal of the season. He put the team 1-0 up against Buffalo inside the opening minute, but the Blue Jackets ended up suffering a 5-2 loss. Gaudreau finished the campaign with a three-game point streak and scored in both of the final two games, but the season was full of frustration for him, as Columbus struggled to compete and battled injuries all year. Gaudreau himself missed a pair of games, finishing with 74 points in 80 appearances. He signed a big seven-year deal last summer with the club and will hope for a much better year in 2023-24. It will come with a new head coach after the Blue Jackets announced the firing of Brad Larsen Saturday.
Columbus Blue Jackets left wing Johnny Gaudreau (illness) will play Saturday against the Rangers. His status for the game was in doubt after Gaudreau logged only 2:15 of ice time Thursday versus New Jersey due to an illness, but he has made a fast recovery and is good to go. Johnny Hockey has been quiet lately, going scoreless in four of his past five appearances, but he leads the team with 71 points in 76 games and should be Columbus' main offensive threat. Gaudreau will skate with Boone Jenner and Kirill Marchenko on the first line.
Columbus Blue Jackets left wing Johnny Gaudreau made a very early exit Thursday against New Jersey, leaving the game with an illness after taking just three shifts. He logged a total of 2:15 of ice time in the contest. It's unclear if this will also affect Gaudreau's status for Saturday's clash with the Rangers. Gaudreau has been by far the team's best attacking player, boasting 71 points through 76 games, but battling for a last-place finish definitely wasn't something he envisioned when signing a seven-year deal with the club last summer. He will aim to gain momentum for next season when he's healthy enough to play again.
