Terry McLaurin Dynasty 2022

Terry McLaurin

In the world of Dynasty football, it is best to remember that it is more of a marathon rather than a sprint.  Terry McLaurin is a buy-low target despite needing a new contract and question marks at the quarterback position.

Terry McLaurin has had some pretty middle-of-the-road QB play since being drafted by Washington in 2019. In his rookie year, he finished 29th in points per reception leagues. In that time, he caught passes from Case Keenum (8 games started) and Dwayne Haskins (7 games started). His season totals were 58 catches on 93 targets for 919 yards and 7 touchdowns.

2020 was yet again another year of rotating quarterback play. Mainly due to Alex Smith’s gruesome season/career-ending injury. Washington had to start Dwayne Haskins another 6 games and then Kyle Allen also received 4 starts himself. Even with the inconsistencies at the quarterback position, F1 went on to have his best finish in his 3 years in the league with 87 catches on 134 targets for 1118 yards and 4 touchdowns. This stat line was 20th for Wide receivers in 2020.

Finally, this past season was the most games that Terry McLaurin was given with 1 quarterback. He was the 25th best points per reception receiver in 2021 with the stat line of 77 catches on 130 targets for 1053 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Scary Terry has never really had a legit QB1.

This season the newly renamed Commanders are going to do their best to find an option at Quarterback this off-season.  With plenty of QBs available, this could be on the year Washington could look to make a big move. With names like Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Derek Carr, Matt Ryan, Kirk Cousins (possible reunion if bridges weren’t burned), and even Deshaun Watson all possibly on the trade block.

I believe that Washington is willing to give up their 11th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft if they feel like they could get a playoff contender Quarterback. According to Spotrac, Washington is currently sitting at the 10th best Cap Space with 30.3 million in available money. When looking at the list of available free agent Quarterbacks you’ll see names like Jameis Winston, Teddy Bridgewater, and Mitchell Trubisky, but these names might not be that big of an upgrade from the play that they have received from Taylor Heinicke who finished as the QB19 in 2021.

The other option is the Commanders could look to keep the 11th pick in the draft and select a QB.  Sam Howell, Matt Corral, Malik Willis, and Kenny Pickett are a few names available, and even FantasyData’s very own Jake Oliver picked Malik Willis as the Commanders new gunslinger in his latest NFL Mock Draft

But with Terry McLaurin needing a new contract, this may push the young wide receiver out the door.  I believe it’s probably in their best interest to get aggressive in free agency.

Despite all the offseason work that needs to be done,  I’m all in all on Terry McLaurin. I’m not sure how the Dynasty Football world feels about him at this time, some may want to unload him knowing the team is going through a transition and his contract could become an issue. But as you can see, the latest odds out as of FEB 23rd has the Washington Commanders as the front runner in the Deshaun Watson sweepstakes. If this does happen McLaurin’s value should shoot to the moon.

The Texans are playing hardball, demanding a king’s ransom for Watson, but gaining the 11th overall pick and possibly future picks should push this trade along.
