Tyler Allgeier Fantasy Preview 2024

Tyler Allgeier Fantasy 2024

When constructing a winning football team, plenty of depth is essential. The same can be said for fantasy football, which makes the mid-to-late-round picks in every draft critical. You never know where fantasy stardom may come from, but one position that consistently has breakout performers is running back. Every year, a few starters get injured, leaving their backups as some of the most valuable players in fantasy. One player who is going to be one of the most valuable backups this year is Tyler Allgeier. He is the RB2 in Atlanta behind Bijan Robinson, but he may have plenty of standalone value outside of being a handcuff.

Reports from the Falcons training camp show Allgeier will be involved in the offense this season. According to Coachspeak Index, Falcons OC Zac Robinson said, “Tyler’s gonna have a big role-at certain points of the season-were gonna be leaning on him.” While that is not what you want to hear as a Bijan Robinson owner, it does show Allgeier may be undervalued in fantasy. Allgeier has an ADP of 148 which is RB47. That is far too low for one of the best handcuffs in fantasy and an RB who could have some standalone value. Last season, Allgeier had 186 rush attempts to Robinson’s 214. However, Robinson was much more involved in the passing game. He caught 58 passes on 86 targets compared to Allgeier’s 18 receptions on 23 targets. Also, it is worth mentioning that Robinson was the more efficient runner. He averaged 4.6 yards per carry to Allgeier’s 3.7. At some point, the Falcons’ coaching staff will realize that Robinson is the superior player, affecting Allgeier’s touches. Last season, Robinson averaged 61.2 yards created per game and yards created per attempt to Allgeier’s 40.3 and 3.7, respectively. Also, it is worth noting the draft capital of the Falcons’ backfield; Robinson was a first-round pick, while Allgeier was selected in the fifth round. There is no plausible scenario where Allgeier will take over for Robinson without an injury.

The Falcons saw a regime change this offseason and have a new coaching staff. Raheem Morris is the head coach, and Zac Robinson is the first-year OC. Robinson spent the last four seasons coaching under Sean McVay with the Rams. No one knows what twist Robinson will add to his scheme, but you can assume it will be similar to what the Rams run. The Rams were one of the most balanced teams in the NFL last season, finishing 13th in pass attempts and rush attempts. With Kirk Cousins now in Atlanta, the Falcons should have no problem replicating that success.

All fantasy managers look for running backs who will be used around the goal line. Allgeier was Atlanta’s goal-line back last season; he scored three touchdowns from inside the five-yard line. The new coaching staff makes it uncertain if his role will remain the same, but you have to think he will used around the goal line in some capacity. It also helps that Allgeier is slightly larger than Robinson, which could lead to the team using him to get the tough yards. The Falcons only averaged 18.9 points per game last season, but the improved offense should lead to more red zone and touchdown opportunities.

Ultimately, Allgeier is set up to be one of the top handcuffs in fantasy football. As long as Robinson is healthy, that will limit his upside. The comments from Zac Robinson should entice fantasy owners to take Allgeier in the later rounds. Some players being drafted around Allgeier are Ty Chandler, Jaylen Wright, and Jaleel McLaughlin. None of those players carry the upside of Allgeier. Allgeier makes a ton of sense if you use the Zero-RB approach. Until we see his role this season, Allgeier should be stashed on the bench.
