Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 3

Waiver Wire Pickups

Week 3 is here in the 2023 NFL season. It’s hard to believe that it’s already Week 3. If only we could have NFL football year-round. Congratulations on surviving Week 2 of the NFL Season. It was a bloodbath littered with injuries, under-performances, ghosting, and even wilder finishes. We had more injuries to running backs and quarterbacks. Many players suffered injuries or awful performances like Saquon Barkley, Joe Burrow, and many more.  Due to these injuries and poor performances from players, you need some new players on your roster. That’s why you’re reading this article. I’ll give you some names that you should see if they are on your waivers and consider picking them up. The league I’ll be basing these on is a 1QB, six-point passing touchdown, PPR, and 12-team league, although I’ll include some deeper league shout-outs.

The waivers are based on Yahoo’s system and roster percentages. Waivers typically process Tuesday or Wednesday night so go get those claims in! I wish you luck with Week 3 and may the NFL overlords give us some great football, no missed kicks, and plenty of healthy players with no injuries. Truly, it’s kind of depressing and crazy that Week 3’s here already. Enjoy the fantasy football and NFL season while you can!

Quick Links

Quarterbacks

Sam Howell

Washington Commanders, 20% rostered

With the news that Joe Burrow might miss next week, many teams will be searching for a stop-gap quarterback for their fantasy team. Howell could be that guy. Howell just shredded a tough Broncos’ defense for 299 yards and two touchdowns. He had 25+ points in six-point touchdown leagues. He does face the Bills next weekend, but I’d still expect high-end QB2 numbers as the Commanders will have to score a lot of points to stay close to Buffalo. Plus, Howell has the most upside of quarterbacks that are widely available right now.

Running Backs

Zack Moss

Indianapolis Colts, 53% rostered

Moss returned on Sunday with the Colts with a flurry of strong rushes and he finished as an RB1. The Colts will be running a lot with young quarterback Anthony Richardson. Plus, Moss is set up to receive the bulk of the carries until Jonathan Taylor returns, if he does at all. Moss had 18 carries for 88 yards and a touchdown. Plus, he saw four targets that he caught for 19 yards. Anytime a running back is getting 20+ touches, he needs to be rostered. This percentage should be far closer to 100.

Matt Breida

New York Giants, 2% rostered

The news that Saquon Barkley is out for likely three weeks or more with a sprained ankle has made Breida a must-own. He’s set up to get the bulk of the Giants’ carries behind a strong offensive line. Breida should provide flex-value. If you have Barkley, you have to get Breida. He’s a capable rusher and receiver that has put up huge weeks in the past. Plus, the Giants love to run the ball and get their running backs involved. Give me the back that will get 13+ touches while Barkley is out.

Honorable Mentions: Tyjae Spears, Craig Reynolds, Roschon Johnson

Wide Receivers

Josh Reynolds

Detroit Lions, 13% rostered

Reynolds is serving as the deep threat for this Lions’ offense until Jameson Williams returns in Week 7. That’s still a while away and Reynolds is coming off two strong back-to-back outings. This past Sunday saw Reynolds see six targets and catch five of them for 66 yards and two touchdowns. He has Jared Goff’s trust and is a capable WR2 for them. He will continue to be a viable WR3/flex play in fantasy until otherwise proven. Plus, Amon-Ra St. Brown might’ve suffered a turf toe injury that could keep him out. It will be interesting to see but the Lions are a strong offensive team. If ARSB misses time, Reynolds would see the most targets and be a WR2 in fantasy. That’s why he’s a must-have off waivers this week.

Skyy Moore

Kansas City Chiefs, 49% rostered

I hope you didn’t drop Moore after his Week 1 disaster. He’s still the number one wide receiver in Kansas City running the most routes and from the most positions on offense. He scored 16 points this past Sunday after catching three of four targets for 70 yards and a touchdown. It shouldn’t be a difficult idea to grasp that you want the top-skill guys for Patrick Mahomes. Moore is one of those guys so definitely take advantage of those who dropped him after Week 1. Skyy could just be starting to break out and you won’t want to miss out on him like you did Nacua.

Honorable Mentions: Rashid Shaheed, Jayden Reed, Jonathan Mingo, Romeo Doubs

Tight Ends

Sam LaPorta

Detroit Lions, 72% rostered

Sam LaPorta continued to be a TE1 in Week 2 with a strong game against the Seahawks. He’s seen at least five targets in each game so far including six on Sunday with five catches for 63 yards. He’s yet to score a touchdown, but that will happen. He’s seen the third-most targets on the Lions and has a terrific matchup next week against the Falcons. LaPorta could see even more targets if St. Brown misses any games. The same is true if the Detroit Lions pass more with David Montgomery potentially limited or missing next week’s game.

Honorable Mentions: Hunter Henry, Zach Ertz

As always, I’m more than happy to talk on Twitter. Let me know your thoughts on these players if you managed to trade for/away from them. If you need thoughts on any trade, my DMs are open on 18/7. I respond to everyone.
