The Wyndham Championship
Preview for the Wyndham Championship: We are now in the last regular season week of the 2022-2023 campaign with the Wyndham Championship last in the rotation before the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the first leg of the playoffs, begins next week. This tournament has been around since 1938 with it originally being known as the Greater Greensboro Open and Sam Snead winning the inaugural edition by five strokes. Wyndham Championship winners over the last five years include Tom Kim in 2022, Kevin Kisner in 2021, Jim Herman in 2020, J.T. Poston in 2019, and Brandt Snedeker in 2018.
Tournament purse: The prize money for this week’s event is $7.6M; the winner collects $1.314M and also earns 500 FedEx Cup points.
Course and key stats: Sedgefield Country Club is 7,131 yards long, is a par 70, and the large greens are bentgrass. The winning score at this tournament over the last five years ranges from -15 to -22, and you can expect a similar score again this week. Some key stats to focus on this week, in order, are driving accuracy percentage, strokes gained: total, strokes gained: off the tee, strokes gained: tee to green, and strokes gained: around the green.
The 2023 Wyndham Championship: We have a full 156-player field this week, and the top 65 players plus ties after round 2 will move on to play round 3 on Saturday and round 4 on Sunday. Some notable players this week include Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Thomas, Sam Burns, Sungjae Im, and other decent golfers, as well. On a scale ranging from A to D, I rank the field strength to be a B-.

15 Players Who Are Either High-Potential or Solid-Value Plays This Week – Get Them Into Your DFS Lineups
J.T. Poston (Salary: DraftKings – $9.2K) – Poston stayed hot last week collecting a T2 at the 3M Open, and now has three top 6’s over his last four starts. He won here four years ago and seems like a great pick for the week despite us not really being used to paying $9K+ for J.T., but he’s worth it right now. Wyndham Championship finishes over the last five years: 2022 – T21, 2021 – cut, 2020 – cut, 2019 – Won, and 2018 – cut.
Sungjae Im (Salary: DraftKings – $10.8K) – He has been a bit shaky lately with two missed cuts in his last three starts, but he had a T20 at The Open Championship two starts ago and has a stellar record at this event with three top 9’s in four starts including his runner-up finish last year gaining strokes across the board. Wyndham Championship finishes over the last five years: 2022 – T2, 2021 – T24, 2020 – T9, and 2019 – T6.
Chesson Hadley (Salary: DraftKings – $7.0K) – Hadley had a T6 two starts ago at the Barracuda Championship, and has four top 33’s over his last five starts. He has competed here every year since 2012, he had a T8 last year gaining 5.59 strokes on approach, and a T15 last year. Wyndham Championship finishes over the last five years: 2022 – T8, 2021 – T15, 2020 – T51, 2019 – T53, and 2018 – T45.
Russell Henley (Salary: DraftKings – $10.2K) – Henley has seven teen finishes over his last eleven starts and also had a T4 at the Masters in April. I like that he’s a really strong approach player, and he has three consecutive top 9’s here including a T5 last year where he gained 10.64 strokes ball-striking. Wyndham Championship finishes over the last five years: 2022 – T5, 2021 – T7, 2020 – T9, 2019 – T31, and 2018 – cut.
Eric Cole (Salary: DraftKings – $7.7K) – Cole has four top 30’s over his last seven starts, hasn’t missed a cut during this stretch, and took home a T6 at the Canadian Open. He’s good on approach and with his putter, and these are always two positives I like seeing in any golfer. Wyndham Championship finishes over the last five years: none.
Stephan Jaeger (Salary: DraftKings – $8.9K) – If you want a player who’s safe with some upside, then Jaeger is likely a good target for you this week as he has made eleven straight cut lines and has only missed playing one weekend over his last sixteen starts. He has finished no worse than T34 over his last four events played and had a T9 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic four starts ago. He played well here a year ago en route to a T13 and played solid throughout except for a 1.11 stroke loss around the green. Wyndham Championship finishes over the last five years: 2022 – T13, 2019 – cut, and 2018 – T70.
Doug Ghim (Salary: DraftKings – $7.2K) – Ghim has seven top 33’s in his last eight starts and it’s on the back of strong ball-striking. He hasn’t fared so well at this venue but did have a top 20 five years ago, and his game is in much better shape than it has been over the past few years, so don’t let three straight missed cuts here deter you. Wyndham Championship finishes over the last five years: 2022 – cut, 2021 – cut, 2020 – cut, and 2018 – T20.
Cameron Davis (Salary: DraftKings – $8.8K) – He’s coming off a top 10 last week, has two top 17’s over his past three starts, and has three top 33’s over his last four. He’s a fairly complete player and does have a decent record at this venue, so I can endorse the services of David this week. Wyndham Championship finishes over the last five years: 2020 – T15 and 2019 – T22.
Byeong Hun An (Salary: DraftKings – $8.4K) – An played nicely overseas with a T3 at the Scottish Open and a T23 at The Open Championship, and he has played well throughout 2023 with a strong showing in the ball-striking department. He had a stout 3rd-place finish here four years ago, and he had a T18 here back in 2015 gaining 12.10 strokes ball-striking, so he has shown that he can torch it off the tee and on approach here. Wyndham Championship finishes over the last five years: 2021 – T35 and 2019 – 3rd.
Billy Horschel (Salary: DraftKings – $7.6K) – I think we’re getting a pretty good deal on Horschel this week given his solid play at this event with four top 11’s since 2016 including a 2nd three years ago. He’s coming off a T13 at the 3M Open, and I could see him doing something similar this week also. Wyndham Championship finishes over the last five years: 2022 – T27, 2020 – 2nd, 2019 – T6, and 2018 – T11.
Alex Noren (Salary: DraftKings – $7.3K) – Noren has been quietly making some noise with three top 23’s over his last four starts including a T9 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He has been leaning heavily on his short game, but did gain 2.87 strokes on approach last week. Wyndham Championship finishes over the last five years: 2019 – T60.
Denny McCarthy (Salary: DraftKings – $8.7K) – The Open Championship wasn’t too kind to McCarthy, but otherwise, he has been playing spectacular golf with three top 7’s in four starts prior including a 2nd at the Memorial Tournament. He has three top 22’s here in his last four starts including a top 10 finish in 2020 where he gained 6.97 strokes ball-striking and 3.78 on the greens. Wyndham Championship finishes over the last five years: 2022 – cut, 2021 – T15, 2020 – T9, 2019 – T22, and 2018 – T36.
Alex Smalley (Salary: DraftKings – $8.1K) – Smalley has two top 9’s over his last four starts including a T2 at the John Deere Classic where he gained 9.25 strokes ball-striking and gained strokes across every major stat category. He just missed out on a top 10 finish here last year simply by gaining strokes in every major stat category, but nothing popped for him. He should be good for a top 20 or a top 30 this week, and has some upside. Wyndham Championship finishes over the last five years: 2022 – T13 and 2021 – T29.
Aaron Rai (Salary: DraftKings – $8.6K) – Rai has four top 24’s over his last five starts including a T3 at the Canadian Open and a T9 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He has pretty much gained strokes across the board over his last five starts and is a consistent gainer in the ball-striking category. Wyndham Championship finishes over the last five years: 2022 – T71.
Garrick Higgo (Salary: DraftKings – $7.3K) – He’s rocking and rolling right now with three consecutive top 19’s including a T19 at the Scottish Open. If his putter remains hot this week, then he could extend that top 19 streak to four starts. Wyndham Championship finishes over the last five years: 2022 – cut.
