Angels Take a Chance on Alek Manoah, Sign him to One-Year Deal

Free-agent right-hander Alek Manoah and the Los Angeles Angels agreed to a one-year, $1.95 million deal on Tuesday, a source told Jeff Passan of ESPN. The 27-year-old became a free agent after he was non-tendered by the Atlanta Braves following the 2025 season. He will now head back to the American League on a fully guaranteed big-league deal. Manoah worked his way back from right-elbow surgery that he had in June of 2024 and didn't pitch at all in the big leagues. In 33 1/3 innings (seven starts) at Triple-A Buffalo, Manoah had a decent 2.97 ERA and 1.36 WHIP with 30 strikeouts and 18 walks. The former 11th overall pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2019 out of West Virginia finished third in the AL Cy Young voting in 2022 after going 16-7 with a 2.24 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 180:51 K:BB in 31 starts. Injuries and mechanical issues caused Manoah to fall off a cliff since then, but the Halos are hoping this low-risk investment will pan out and he'll contribute to a rotation that was a huge liability in 2025.

Alek Manoah Becomes a Free Agent

Right-hander Alek Manoah became a free agent on Friday after the Atlanta Braves did not tender him a contract for the 2026 season, according to the team. Manoah was an All-Star in 2022 with the Toronto Blue Jays and finished third in the American League Cy Young voting that year, but things quickly fell apart for him the following season, and now he's a free agent this winter. The 27-year-old had UCL surgery on his right elbow in June of 2024 and spent most of this year rehabbing. Manoah had a 3.96 ERA and 1.53 WHIP with 35 strikeouts and 23 walks in 10 starts over 38 2/3 innings at four minor-league levels in the Blue Jays organization in 2025 before he was cut in late September. The former first-rounder will likely have to settle for a minor-league deal somewhere as he looks to work his way back to the big leagues.

Braves Claim Alek Manoah Off Waivers From Blue Jays

The Atlanta Braves announced on Friday that they claimed right-hander Alek Manoah off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays and optioned him to the minors. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Braves moved second baseman Ozzie Albies (thumb) to the 60-day injured list. If anyone can turn Manoah around, it could be the Braves. The 27-year-old was a Cy Young candidate and an All-Star with Toronto in 2022, when he went 16-7 with a 2.24 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 180:51 K:BB in 31 starts. He had a disastrous 5.87 ERA and 1.74 WHIP the following year in 19 starts and was sent to the minors. Manoah made his way back in 2024 before needing Tommy John surgery. He made 10 minor-league rehab starts this year and posted a 3.96 ERA with 35 K's and 23 walks in 38 2/3 innings. Manoah will look to turn things around in spring training in 2026 while competing for a rotation spot, but he'll most likely start in the minors.

Alek Manoah Designated for Assignment by Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays designated right-hander Alek Manoah for assignment on Tuesday, according to Mitch Bannon of The Athletic. It's been a hard fall for Manoah after he was a Cy Young candidate in the American League in 2022, when he went 16-7 with a 2.24 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 180:51 K:BB in 196 2/3 innings over 31 starts for Toronto. The 27-year-old went 3-9 with a career-worst 5.87 ERA, 1.74 WHIP, and 79:59 K:BB in 87 1/3 frames over 19 starts in 2023 and was sent to the minor leagues amidst his struggles. Manoah made it back to the big leagues last year and looked better, but he made only five MLB starts while missing most of the year with a flexor strain in his right elbow. He did not make it back to the majors in 2025 following an internal-brace procedure, and he had a 3.96 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 35:23 K:BB in 10 starts at four different minor-league levels. Another MLB team should take a chance on him for next year, but at this point, it's unlikely he'll ever get back to his All-Star form from 2022.

Alek Manoah Activated, Optioned to Triple-A

The Toronto Blue Jays announced that they have reinstated right-hander Alek Manoah (elbow) from the 60-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Buffalo. To make room for Manoah on the 40-man roster, the team designated infielder Orelvis Martinez for assignment. Manoah is finally healthy after undergoing hybrid Tommy John surgery in June 2024, but with no openings in the Blue Jays' rotation, he'll continue to work in the minors. The former All-Star, 27, made five starts with Buffalo on his rehab assignment and recorded a 3.09 ERA with a 1.46 WHIP, 18 strikeouts, and 12 walks in 23 1/3 innings. Manoah may finish the season there, but with Max Scherzer, Chris Bassitt, and Shane Bieber potentially hitting free agency over the winter, he should have a chance to rejoin Toronto's rotation next spring.

Alek Manoah Pitches Well in Latest Rehab Start

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah (elbow) made his third rehab start with Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday as he works back from June 2024 elbow surgery. Manoah gave up three runs (all unearned) over 5 1/3 innings of six-hit ball and posted five strikeouts against two walks on 85 pitches (50 strikes). Although the 27-year-old has been rehabbing as a starter, the Blue Jays already have six capable rotation options in Kevin Gausman, Max Scherzer, Chris Bassitt, Jose Berrios, Shane Bieber, and Eric Lauer. Barring injuries, Manoah seems likely to pitch in relief if he does make it back to the majors this season. The former All-Star has made all 75 of his career appearances as a starter and recorded a 3.34 ERA with a 1.16 WHIP, 8.83 K/9, and 3.39 BB/9 in 420 innings.

Alek Manoah has his Rehab Extended

Toronto Blue Jays right-handed pitcher Alek Manoah (elbow) has had his minor-league rehab assignment extended by 10 days. He was set to return after his 30-day window for his rehab had expired. Still, after struggling last Wednesday, it was determined that he would need more time before officially being activated. This extension is part of the collective bargaining agreement that allows pitchers returning from Tommy John surgery to receive up to three additional 10-day extensions should they need more time. He is expected to make another start for Triple-A Buffalo early next week. When he is ready to return to the Blue Jays, it's unclear if he will be a part of the team's starting rotation, given their depth. There's still a chance he won't pitch for the Jays in 2025, too.

Alek Manoah Struggles in Rehab Outing on Wednesday

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah (elbow) had a rough start for Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday. Manoah worked 1 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and three earned runs while walking three and hitting a batter. It was the first rehab outing for Manoah at the Triple-A level as he works his way back from the elbow surgery he underwent in June 2024. The 27-year-old has struggled throughout his rehab, allowing nine earned runs, 11 hits, and eight walks across seven total innings. Recent reports indicate that even when fully healthy, Manoah is unlikely to rejoin what has become a deep Blue Jays' starting rotation in 2025.

Alek Manoah Unlikely to Pitch in the Big Leagues in 2025?

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah (elbow) may not have a path to the big leagues this season, according to MLB.com's Keegan Matheson. Manoah has spent all of 2025 to this point working his way back from the elbow surgery he underwent in June 2024. The 27-year-old right-hander has thrown 5 1/3 innings across three rehab appearances, so he would be on track to return from a health perspective. However, Matheson writes that Manoah could be blocked off by the Blue Jays' starting rotation depth at the big league level. Toronto has gotten surprisingly strong work from Eric Lauer as the team's fifth starter, and deadline acquisition Shane Bieber (elbow) is nearing his return from elbow surgery. As such, Manoah is likely to remain in the minor leagues this season, barring multiple starting pitcher injuries for Toronto.

Alek Manoah Throws Three Innings in First Double-A Rehab Start

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah (elbow) threw three innings in his first Double-A rehab start on Thursday. Manoah allowed two earned runs on five hits with three walks and two strikes on 64 pitches (36 strikes). The results weren't great, but it's a notable step forward for the former All-Star as he continues in his rehab from elbow surgery. He went under the knife in June 2024 after making just five appearances a season ago and hasn't pitched in the bigs since. The Jays are hopeful that Manoah will make it back later this month, but barring injuries, it seems unlikely the first-place club will insert him into the rotation upon his return. Toronto has received good production from the starting quintet of Jose Berrios, Kevin Gausman, Max Scherzer, Chris Bassitt, and Eric Lauer.
