Alek Manoah News
The Toronto Blue Jays are willing to listen to offers for right-hander Alek Manoah this offseason. The 25-year-old broke out with a sterling 2.24 ERA in the 2022 season and finished third in Cy Young voting but endured a disastrous 2023 campaign. Not only did he post a 5.87 ERA across 19 outings but he was also demoted to the club's spring training facility following early-season struggles and refused to report to Triple-A Buffalo later in the year after a brief, and unsuccessful, return to the big leagues. While his trade value has certainly taken a hit after a rollercoaster season both on and off the field in 2023, Manoah could still fetch a solid return considering his 2022 campaign but also the fact he is controlled through the 2027 season and has two minor-league options remaining.
Toronto Blue Jays pitchers Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt, Jose Berrios and Yusei Kikuchi are all slated to return to the team's starting rotation next year, and general manager Ross Atkins confirmed that right-hander Alek Manoah (arm) will be in a good spot to earn the final rotation spot come spring training despite his disappointing 2022, where he had a 5.87 ERA in 19 starts and was sent to the minors on two different occasions. The 25-year-old has earned "the right to have a strong leg up" in the fifth-starter competition, Atkins said. "I feel so good about him returning back to the 2021-22 version of himself," the GM added. After Manoah, Toronto's starting depth includes Bowden Francis, Mitch White and top prospect Ricky Tiedemann, who battled injuries in 2023.
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah (shoulder), who was demoted twice to the minor leagues in 2023 due to poor performance and injury, wanted to receive injections to address his undisclosed shoulder injury late in the season. Manoah ended up making only 19 starts for Toronto, going 3-9 with a 5.97 ERA in 87 1/3 innings. It was even more mind-boggling after the former first-rounder had a breakout season the year prior over 31 starts. The 25-year-old hasn't made any public comments since the season ended, but the Jays continue to say that he's in their future plans. There will be a rotation spot for Manoah in 2024, but he may be at odds with the front office after he was demoted twice this year. Regardless, Manoah's fantasy stock heading into 2024 has fallen precipitously after his struggles this year.

After Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah's phenomenal rookie season, he only got better in 2022, posting a 2.24 ERA and 0.99 WHIP with 16 wins, eventually finishing third in the Cy Young voting. However, his 3.35 FIP and 3.98 xFIP were significantly higher than his ERA. Manoah improved his walk rate by 2.2%, but that didn't compensate for his decline in strikeouts. After posting a 27.7% strikeout rate in 2021, it fell to 22.9% this season thanks to a whiff rate that dropped from 29.7% to 24.8% (43rd percentile). The righty's arsenal remained unchanged, with a fastball (35.9%), slider (27.1%), sinker (25.8%), and changeup (11.2%). The biggest problems were Manoah's fastball, which lost 6.4 points in whiff rate, and his slider, which forfeited an inch of horizontal break and 7.4 points in whiff rate. He should be able to regain some strikeout numbers next season, but don't expect a strikeout rate above 25%. Manoah has shown he can limit hard contact during his two seasons in the majors, including an 80th percentile barrel rate and 73rd percentile average exit velocity this year. But the 24-year-old hasn't kept the ball on the ground (38.8% career groundball rate) and should see his career 8.3% HR/FB and .245 BABIP increase. Playing at the Rogers Centre will only magnify these problems, so a home run rate above 1.00 and a batting average closer to .240 wouldn't be surprising. If Steamer's projection of 12 wins, a 4.07 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 195 strikeouts over 199 innings are any indications, Manoah's ADP of 68 is too expensive.
