Angels Release Alex Meyer

The Los Angeles Angels have released right-hander Alex Meyer. The big right-hander missed the entire 2018 season and suffered a setback in his rehab, putting his preparedness for spring training in question. Meyer posted a 3.74 ERA and 1.33 WHIP with 75 strikeouts in 67 2/3 innings in 2017, and represents a nice gamble for teams in need of starting pitching depth.

Alex Meyer Suffers Another Setback

Los Angeles Angels right-hander Alex Meyer had another setback in his shoulder and will be shut down from throwing for another four to six weeks. Meyer missed the entire 2018 season, and suffered a setback in late August as well. It is unclear if the big righty will be ready for the start of spring training. Meyer had a 3.74 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 67 2/3 innings in 2017, and figures to compete for a rotation spot if he is healthy.

Alex Meyer Has Setback in Rehab

Los Angeles Angels pitcher Alex Meyer (shoulder) recently had a setback in his rehab, according to general manager Billy Eppler. He received a cortisone shot and is expected to resume throwing in a few days. Meyer has missed the entire 2018 season, and was never expected to return this year. He is expected to be ready for spring training, although the Angels will need to decide if he is worth a 40-man roster spot. Considering their struggles in the starting rotation, and Meyer's 3.74 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 67.2 innings last season, it seems likely he will compete for a spot next year.

Alex Meyer Out for 2018 Season After Labrum Surgery

Angels starter Alex Meyer (shoulder) will have surgery on his labrum and will miss not only the rest of 2017, but all of 2018 as well. Meyer finishes 2017 with a 3.74 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 67 1/3 innings. He was intriguing 2018 sleeper, but will have to wait until 2019 to make an impact in fantasy.

Alex Meyer Won't Return This Year

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Alex Meyer (shoulder) had a setback during his throwing session Saturday and will not pitch again during the regular season, according to general manager Billy Eppler. He will be re-examined. That ends what was altogether a pretty successful season in Anaheim, as Meyer went 4-5 with a 3.74 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and impressing 10.0 K/9 in 13 starts (67 1/3 innings). His strikeouts upside makes the post-hype prospect an intriguing deep sleeper in 2018 drafts, and there's a good shot he'll win a rotation spot out of spring training.

Alex Meyer To Long Toss Wednesday

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Alex Meyer (shoulder) plans to do some long toss Wednesday, and he's hoping that the team will try to bring him back before the end of the season. The Angels aren't in dire straights with their rotation with the recent returns of Tyler Skaggs and Andrew Heaney, but Meyer would certainly give them a boost as they seek a wild-card spot. The tall right-hander was seeing some success with a 3.74 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and impressive 10.0 K/9 in 13 starts with the Halos this year. Counting on him for any more fantasy contributions in September isn't wise, though.

Alex Meyer Hoping to Return to Rotation

Angels starter Alex Meyer (shoulder) has continued to do light throwing, but has not progressed to long toss. Manager Mike Scioscia anticipates that Meyer will rehab and come back as a starter, but there is still a chance he returns as a reliever instead to limit his workload. Meyer has a 3.74 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP on the year, but the return of Andrew Heaney may have pushed him out of a rotation spot. If Meyer does return to the rotation he is worth a spot in deeper leagues and AL-only formats. As a reliever, he is not rosterable in most formats.

Alex Meyer Stops Throwing After Shoulder Pain

Angels starter Alex Meyer felt a little something in his shoulder and stopped throwing this week, according to manager Mike Scioscia. Meyer says he feels better now, but he is still not throwing. Meyer has been on the DL since July 25 and was expected to return shortly, but this setback pushes his return back toward the end of the month. With Andrew Heaney set to return and Garrett Richards not too far behind, Meyer may have a hard time finding a spot back in the rotation. Meyer, 27, has a 3.74 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP on the season, but with a less-than-impressive 4.12 FIP.

Alex Meyer Playing Catch

Angels' starter Alex Meyer (shoulder) played light catch on Thursday, his second time playing catch in the week. Meyer was placed on the DL back on July 25 but was always expected to return quickly. Although there is no firm timetable, Meyer can be expected back in short order. The 27-year-old has posted a 3.74 ERA (4.13 FIP) and a 1.34 WHIP with 75 strikeouts in 67 1/3 innings. Meyer remains a nice starting option in deep mixed and AL-only formats and is an intriguing streamer for owners in need of strikeouts.

Alex Meyer With Positive News

Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia said he expects Alex Meyer (shoulder) to return "relatively quickly." Meyer was placed on the disabled list late Monday night with a right shoulder injury, but an MRI taken Tuesday showed no major structural damage. The 27-year-old has posted a 3.74 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and 75/42 K/BB ratio in 67 1/3 innings this season out of the Angels' starting rotation. Meyer was recalled to pick against the Nationals on Saturday and surrendered just one hit over seven shutout innings versus the Nationals.
