The Cincinnati Reds signed free-agent catcher Austin Romine and right-hander Alan Busenitz to minor-league deals on Tuesday that include invitations to major-league spring training. Romine, an 11-year veteran, hit just .155/.187/.248 with three home runs, nine RBI and 10 runs scored in 51 games with the Los Angeles Angels, St. Louis Cardinals and Reds in 2022. The 34-year-old backstop will provide organizational depth with a career slash line of .230/.268/.348 in 484 games. Busenitz, a 32-year-old right-handed reliever hasn't appeared in the majors since 2018. In his two years with the Minnesota Twins, he had a 4.58 ERA (5.49 FIP), 1.44 WHIP and 49 strikeouts in 57 innings over 51 relief appearances. He pitched much better in Japan the last four years, but Busenitz will strictly be organizational relief depth.
The St. Louis Cardinals activated catcher Austin Romine from the restricted list on Thursday. The Cardinals also optioned outfielder Conner Capel, catcher Ivan Herrera and second baseman Cory Spangenberg to Triple-A Memphis. Romine was unavailable to play in a two-game series in Toronto this week against the Blue Jays because he's unvaccinated. With Yadier Molina (knee) still on the injured list while rehabbing in the minor leagues, Romine will return to serve as Andrew Knizner's backup for a weekend series against the Washington Nationals, which starts on Friday. In nine games for St. Louis, Romine is 3-for-22 with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Chicago Cubs catcher Austin Romine went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Colorado Rockies. Romine took Austin Gomber yard in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2 at the time. Romine has been hurt by injuries this year and has only had 29 at-bats for the season. With Willson Contreras (knee) nearing a return and Robinson Chirinos being more productive at the plate, Romine's future could be cloudy moving forward. He is now hitting .207 with one home run and two RBI.
Chicago Cubs catcher Austin Romine (wrist) was moved to the 60-day injured list. The 32-year-old, who opened the season on the shelf with a knee injury, has been dealing with a sprained left wrist. He was originally scheduled to be out a few weeks. However, it now appears as if things have trended in the wrong direction. The 2007 second-round pick is batting just .111 throughout nine games this year, racking up one hit and one RBI while striking out three times. Fantasy managers can safely drop him in all leagues regardless of format.
The Chicago Cubs have placed catcher Austin Romine (wrist) on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist sprain. Romine came over this offseason as a free agent and started the season on the injured list with a knee injury, before being activated on April 14. Romine has just one hit over nine at-bats and is the backup to starting catcher Willson Contreras. Catcher Tony Wolters has been recalled from the teams alternative training site to replace Romine. Wolters filled in as the backup to Contreras earlier this season and is 0-for-4 on the season. He can safely remain on the waiver wire.
The Chicago Cubs have activated catcher Austin Romine from the 10-day injured list on Wednesday. Romine came over in free agency this offseason and will serve as the backup to Willson Contreras. Romine had been dealing with a right knee sprain. The catcher will be thrown right into action against Corbin Burnes and bat eighth. He should be avoided in all formats.
The Chicago Cubs have activated catcher Austin Romine (knee) from the injured list. He will make his 2021 debut on Wednesday against Corbin Burnes and the Milwaukee Brewers. Romine will be the team's backup catcher behind Willson Contreras. Expect to see Romine start about once or twice per week going forward. Romine spent the 2020 season with the Detroit Tigers and was the team's primary catcher. He slashed .238/.259/.323 with two home runs and 17 RBI over 37 games last year.
Chicago Cubs catcher Austin Romine (knee) figures to be the club's backup catcher during the regular season, although when he'll be cleared to do so isn't apparent. Manager David Ross stated Friday that Romine is "day-to-day" with a sprained right knee and that there isn't a timetable for when he is expected back. Through three Cactus League games, Romine has gone 3-for-9, including bopping a home run. With Willson Contreras a near everyday option behind the dish for the Cubs, Romine will hold little fantasy intrigue during 2021, aside from the rare punt play when he draws a start. Check back for updates on his status as Chicago makes them available over the coming weeks.
The Chicago Cubs agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million deal with free-agent catcher Austin Romine on Friday, according to sources. While Willson Contreras remains in trade rumors this offseason, the Cubs needed more catching depth after shipping Victor Caratini to the Padres along with starter Yu Darvish. Chicago also has Miguel Amaya, the team's No. 8 prospect, waiting in the wings, but he's expected to start the 2021 season in the minors. The 32-year-old Romine hit .238/.259/.323 with two home runs and 17 RBI in 37 games with the Tigers last year, but he was hitting .291 (.726 OPS) through August before a foul ball to his right knee caused him some issues down the stretch. Romine is more effective with the bat than with the glove, but he won't have much use in fantasy leagues unless the Cubs trade Contreras and open up more playing time for Romine.
Detroit Tigers catcher Austin Romine was scratched from Sundays lineup against Minnesota and right-hander Kenta Maeda due to a sore knee with Grayson Greiner taking over behind the dish in his place. Romine has been a solid DFS punt play behind the plate for most of the season due to his .291 average, while Greiner presents a much riskier play with a slash line of .115/.233/.308 coming into play Sunday. Romines next opportunity to rejoin the starting nine comes Tuesday against Milwaukee should the Tigers hang on to his services through the Trade Deadline.
