Boog Powell News

Boog Powell Takes BP For First Time Since Going On DL

Oakland Athletics outfielder Boog Powell (knee) took batting practice for the first time since he went on the disabled list on Tuesday, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Powell has been out for a couple of months with an MCL sprain sustained while running the bases. Power was in a battle during spring training for the center field spot against Dustin Fowler, who did well after being demoted to Triple-A, but Fowler has struggled since being called up. There is no need to have saved a roster spot for Powell.

Boog Powell Will Be Out Longer Due To MCL Sprain

Oakland Athletics outfielder Boog Powell (knee) has a Grade 1 MCL sprain, according to Julian McWilliams of The Athletic. Manager Bob Melvin pointed out that Powell wont do anything for three weeks. He was put on the disabled list on Saturday for a sprained right knee sustained while running the bases. The Athletics replaced him with Mark Canha. Many are calling for prospect Dustin Fowler to be called up, but the team has already stated they want Fowler to get more at-bats in Triple-A. Currently, Fowler is hitting .286. If he were to go on a tear, it would be tough for the Athletics to keep him down with an open spot available.

Boog Powell Sidelined With Knee Sprain

Oakland Athletics outfielder Boog Powell hits the DL with a sprained right knee sustained while running the bases on Saturday, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. He will head back to Oakland on Monday to have an MRI. Powell was in a competition with rookie Dustin Fowler in spring for the center field spot. His sluggish season continues from spring (.222 AVG) into the season with a .167 average in 23 at-bats. Fowler needs more development time so Powell will be replaced on the roster with Mark Canha who will be called up on Sunday.

Boog Powell Makes 25-Man Roster, Dustin Fowler Gets Optioned

Oakland Athletics outfielder Boog Powell has made the 25-man roster, according to Julian McWilliams of The Athletic. He has won the starting job in center field, as Dustin Fowler was optioned down to Triple-A Nashville. Powell will have to do better than he did this spring to keep his spot on the roster, as he had a .222 average, which equaled Fowler's performance.

Boog Powell Might Have Inside Track On Center Field Spot

Updating a previous report on the Oakland Athletics center field competition, all indications are moving towards Dustin Fowler being the odd man out and starting the year in the minors. According to Jane Lee of MLB.com, manager Bob Melvin said, "Were comfortable with Smolinski and Powell." This would indicate that Boog Powell might be getting a firmer grasp on the center field position and Jake Smolinski would win the final bench spot. Dustin Fowler's .189 average in spring does not instill confidence. A move to the minor leagues would help Fowler regain the trust and ultimately unseat Powell in center.

Boog Powell Done for the Year

As expected, the A's have shut down center fielder Boog Powell (knee) for the rest of the season. Powell was considered a long-shot to return after still feeling soreness after hitting in the cages. Powell has been a nice add for the A's, having hit .282 with three home runs in 117 at-bats. Jake Smolinski appears to be the starter in CF for the rest of the season.

Boog Powell's Return in Jeopardy

A's center fielder Boog Powell (knee) is still feeling sore, putting a return this season in serious jeopardy. Powell was able to hit in the cages a few days ago but has not progressed much beyond that. If he is unable to return this season, look for Mark Canha and possibly Franklin Barreto to play CF in his absence. Powell has been a nice addition to the team this year, hitting .282 with three home runs in 117 at-bats. Powell will compete with Canha and Barreto, as well as the injured Dustin Fowler, for the starting CF job next season.

Boog Powell Hoping to Return Before End of Season

A's center fielder Boog Powell (knee) is hitting in the cages on Friday. He is still hoping to return for a few games at the end of the season, assuming the swelling in his bruised knee goes down. When he is able to run, that will provide a better timeline of when/if he can return this year. Powell has been a nice addition for the A's so far this season and is hitting .282 with three home runs in 117 at-bats. He will have to compete with Dustin Fowler and possibly Franklin Barreto to start in center field next season, but if he does he could be worth a late-round flyer in deeper formats in 2018.

Chad Pinder, Boog Powell to See Playing Time Bump in Oakland

The A's recent trade of Rajai Davis has created a likely platoon in center field between recently acquired Boog Powell and utility player Chad Pinder. It sounds like Pinder may get the majority of starts in center field against left-handers, with Powell continuing to start regularly against right-handers. The platoon allows the A's to get a good look at two of their prospects as they begin to build toward the 2018 season. Powell has hit a very strong .433 (13-for-30) with the A's since coming over from the Mariners in the Yonder Alonso trade. Pinder is hitting .244 on the year with 10 home runs and 29 RBI in just 205 at-bats. Both players are options in AL-only formats and deeper leagues; and an uptick in playing time will make them even more valuable as the season winds down.

Boog Powell Thrives in Leadoff Spot

A's newly acquired center fielder Boog Powell was given an opportunity to bat leadoff on Sunday and he made the most of it; going 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in the A's 3-2 victory over the AL-leading Astros. Powell came over from the Mariners in the Yonder Alonso trade and has hit .462 (6-for-13) since arriving. Powell will certainly get a long look for the A's, as they are out of contention and open to giving younger players a chance to prove themselves. If Powell gets extended time at the leadoff spot he could be worth a look in AL-only leagues for owners in need of runs, but he has shown limited power and has yet to steal a base at the Major league level, so his upside is capped.
