Free-agent outfielder Brandon Guyer announced his retirement from baseball on Monday. The 34-year-old was a member of the 2016 American League-champion Cleveland Indians. He had a career .274 batting average and an .824 OPS against left-handed pitchers. Guyer also had 24 home runs in his 671 career at-bats. He went to spring training with the Giants this year but was released on March 26. A fifth-round pick of the Cubs back in 2007, Guyer didn't see any big league action last year and hit just .206 with seven home runs and 27 RBI in 103 games for the Indians in 2018.
The Chicago White Sox signed free-agent outfielder Brandon Guyer to a minor league deal on Tuesday, according to a source. The 33-year-old hit just .236/.326/.327 with two home runs and 20 RBI in 70 games with Cleveland last year due to an injury but he does have a career .824 OPS against left-handed pitchers and will be a platoon option for a rebuilding White Sox club with Avisail Garcia and Matt Davidson gone. Guyer won't be relevant in mixed leagues, but he could be worth a dollar flier in AL-only affairs and he'll be worth considering as a deep sleeper in DFS against certain southpaws.
Indians Pick Up Option On Carlos Carrasco, Decline Brandon Guyer
The Cleveland Indians picked up starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco's $9.75 million option for the 2019 season on Tuesday while declining outfielder Brandon Guyer's $3 million option. Guyer will receive a $250,000 buyout and will become a free agent. Likely an ace on most other teams, Carrasco went 17-10 with a nice 3.38 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and career-high 10.8 K/9 across 32 outings (30 starts) in 2018. That comes after recording 18 wins the previous season. The right-hander will remain a strong fantasy choice for the upcoming season. Guyer hit just .206/.300/.371 with seven home runs and 27 RBI in 103 games for the Tribe. He'll likely latch on somewhere else as a bench bat.
The Cleveland Indians are unlikely to re-sign pending free-agent outfielder Brandon Guyer after he hit .206 (.671 OPS) with seven home runs and 27 RBI in 2018. Outfielders Michael Brantley, Lonnie Chisenhall, Rajai Davis and Melky Cabrera will also be free agents this winter. Guyer is a mostly a bench bat, leaving him little fantasy value.
Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona said that infielder Yandy Diaz and outfielder Brandon Guyer will be in the lineup in Game 3 of the American League Division Series against Astros left-hander Dallas Keuchel on Monday. Diaz will serve as the designated hitter, while Edwin Encarnacion will handle first base, pushing Yonder Alonso to the bench. Melky Cabrera will also sit against the southpaw. Diaz and Guyer will both be sleepers in DFS games with lower ceilings.
Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona said that outfielder Brandon Guyer (shoulder) will take part in the intrasquad game on Tuesday but will only track pitches. Guyer is listed as day-to-day for now. Even if Guyer is healthy, he wouldn't be a lock for the roster for the American League Division Series against the Astros. He's mostly been a reserve outfielder and hit just .206/.300/.371 with seven home runs and 27 RBI in 103 games for the Tribe this year.
Cleveland Indians outfielder Brandon Guyer was forced to leave Tuesday's game due to a bruised knee. He's day-to-day for now, but a trip to the 10-day disabled list may be on deck. Guyer was replaced in the outfield by Tyler Naquin, who is likely to see an uptick in playing time if Guyer is forced to miss time.
Brandon Guyer Activated from the Disabled List on Thursday
Cleveland Indians outfielder Brandon Guyer (neck) was activated from the disabled list on Thursday. Melky Cabrera was designated for assignment in order to make room on the roster. Guyer missed three weeks because of a neck strain and should return to his usual role as a platoon player. He's been struggling this year, posting a line of .150/.244/.325 in the 33 games he played before hitting the DL. He doesn't need to be owned in any format at this point.
Cleveland Indians outfielder Brandon Guyer (neck) will be activated from the disabled list on Friday, according to manager Terry Francona. Guyer went on the DL back on May 23 with a strained neck but was hitting just .150/.244/.325 before that. He'll likely return to his platoon role but might see less playing time than before due to the recent emergence of Greg Allen.
Cleveland Indians outfielder Brandon Guyer (neck) has been placed on the 10-day disabled list. He joins Bradley Zimmer, Lonnie Chisenhall and Tyler Naquin on the list of Indians outfielders on the DL. Guyer was hitting .150/.244/.325 with three homers and 10 RBI before he landed on the disabled list. He should not be owned in any leagues and will likely not have enough upside worth owning at all this season.
