Brandon Guyer News
Free-agent outfielder Brandon Guyer announced his retirement from baseball on Monday. The 34-year-old was a member of the 2016 American League-champion Cleveland Indians. He had a career .274 batting average and an .824 OPS against left-handed pitchers. Guyer also had 24 home runs in his 671 career at-bats. He went to spring training with the Giants this year but was released on March 26. A fifth-round pick of the Cubs back in 2007, Guyer didn't see any big league action last year and hit just .206 with seven home runs and 27 RBI in 103 games for the Indians in 2018.
The Chicago White Sox signed free-agent outfielder Brandon Guyer to a minor league deal on Tuesday, according to a source. The 33-year-old hit just .236/.326/.327 with two home runs and 20 RBI in 70 games with Cleveland last year due to an injury but he does have a career .824 OPS against left-handed pitchers and will be a platoon option for a rebuilding White Sox club with Avisail Garcia and Matt Davidson gone. Guyer won't be relevant in mixed leagues, but he could be worth a dollar flier in AL-only affairs and he'll be worth considering as a deep sleeper in DFS against certain southpaws.
The Cleveland Indians picked up starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco's $9.75 million option for the 2019 season on Tuesday while declining outfielder Brandon Guyer's $3 million option. Guyer will receive a $250,000 buyout and will become a free agent. Likely an ace on most other teams, Carrasco went 17-10 with a nice 3.38 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and career-high 10.8 K/9 across 32 outings (30 starts) in 2018. That comes after recording 18 wins the previous season. The right-hander will remain a strong fantasy choice for the upcoming season. Guyer hit just .206/.300/.371 with seven home runs and 27 RBI in 103 games for the Tribe. He'll likely latch on somewhere else as a bench bat.
