Yandy Diaz Back in Lineup for Rays in Series Opener Against Yanks

Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz (hands) is serving as the designated hitter and is batting cleanup for the Rays in Friday's series opener against the division-rival New York Yankees and right-hander Gerrit Cole, who is making his first major-league start since 2024, according to MLB.com. Jonathan Aranda is starting at first base for Tampa and will hit third in the batting order. Diaz got the day off on Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles after being hit in both of his hands on Tuesday, but he's now back in action after the team had a day off on Thursday. Fantasy managers will want to plug Diaz back in their lineups in all formats now that he's back. He has gone 11-for-24 (.458) with three home runs, three doubles, 10 RBI, and seven runs scored during his six-game hitting streak, and he's also batting .318 with an .875 OPS, two home runs, and six RBI in 44 career at-bats against Cole in his career. The 34-year-old Cuban first baseman continues to be a hitting machine, as he enters Friday's action with a .316 average (55-for-174) and a .394 on-base percentage in 45 games.

Yandy Diaz Avoids Serious Injury, Could Return on Friday

Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz (hands) got an X-ray and CT scan on Tuesday night after being hit by a pitch on both of his hands, according to Rays reporter Ryan Bass. The imaging came back negative on Diaz, who woke up sore on Wednesday, which is why he was held out of the starting lineup against the Baltimore Orioles. It appears as though he's avoided a serious injury. "I think it got the nail a little bit, but we'll try to give him the day," manager Kevin Cash said. "He was pretty adamant, like he thought he'd be okay, but if we can give him today, and then with the off day tomorrow, hopefully be pretty optimistic about him getting back in (Friday)." Fantasy managers can breathe a sigh of relief, and they'll want to check back on Friday to see if the 34-year-old veteran is ready to play in Friday's series opener in the Bronx against the division-rival New York Yankees. Although the Cuban slugger doesn't have high-end power, he's a must-start in traditional fantasy leagues when he's active, and he's hitting a cool .316 (55-for-174) on the season with 33 RBI, 27 runs, eight home runs, and a steal.

Yandy Diaz Out on Wednesday After Being Hit by a Pitch

Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz (hand) is out of Wednesday's lineup versus the division-rival Baltimore Orioles at Tropicana Field after he was hit by a pitch on the hand on Tuesday, according to MLB.com. Ryan Vilade will draw into the lineup at first base and will bat cleanup for the first-place Rays against Orioles right-hander Shane Baz. We'll have an update on Diaz once we know more about the results of his X-rays, but for right now, fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day. The Rays have an off day on Thursday, so hopefully, Diaz will be ready to roll for the start of a big divisional series on Friday in the Bronx against the New York Yankees. The 34-year-old Cuban continues to be an excellent source of batting average for fantasy managers, as he's hitting .316 (55-for-174), and he's added eight homers, 33 RBI, 27 runs scored, and a stolen base in 45 games across 198 plate appearances. Vilade has been solid for Tampa in his 26 games played, going 19-for-60 (.317) with two homers and 13 RBI.

Yandy Diaz Exits Early on Tuesday After Being Hit By Pitch

Tampa Bay Rays first baseman/designated hitter Yandy Diaz (hand) exited early from his team's matchup against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday after being hit by a pitch on his hand in the eighth inning, per Ryan Bass of MLB TV. Diaz was two-for-four with a home run and two RBI before leaving the game. The 34-year-old has gotten off to a strong start to the 2026 season, hitting .316/.394/.506 with eight home runs, 33 RBI, 27 runs scored, and one stolen base across 198 plate appearances. The extent of Diaz's injury is not yet clear, but fantasy managers will have to hope that X-rays on the hand come back negative. Should Diaz land on the injured list, Rays outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy could be in line to return to the big leagues and see time at designated hitter after being optioned to Triple-A on May 11.

Yandy Diaz Serving as DH as he Returns From Side Injury

Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz (side) will serve as the designated hitter and will bat cleanup for the Rays in his return on Monday in the series opener against the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays and left-hander Eric Lauer at Tropicana Field, according to MLB.com. Fantasy managers will want to get Diaz back into their starting lineups after he was held out of the last two games due to left-side tightness that bothered him in Friday's contest against the San Francisco Giants. The 34-year-old Cuban veteran has continued to be a hitting machine in the early going in 2026, as he enters the new week with a .333/.422/.504 slash line, .926 OPS, five home runs, 21 RBI, 19 runs scored, and a stolen base in 117 total at-bats for the Rays. He's gone 9-for-27 (.333) with two of his five home runs against southpaws, and he's hitting .250 with a 1.000 OPS, a home run, and three RBI in eight career at-bats versus Lauer.

Yandy Diaz Leaves With Side Tightness, Considered Day-to-Day

Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz (side) left Friday's series opener against the San Francisco Giants early with left-side tightness, according to Ryan Bass. Diaz is listed as day-to-day for now, with a potential update on his condition coming after the conclusion of the game against San Fran. Diaz, who was serving as the designated hitter in this one, went 1-for-2 at the plate with his fifth home run of the year (a solo shot) before being replaced by pinch-hitter Jonathan Aranda at DH. The 34-year-old veteran Cuban infielder doesn't appear to be dealing with a serious injury, but don't be surprised if the Rays hold him out of the starting lineup for a day or two to let him heal. Diaz continues to be a hit machine for his fantasy managers in the early portion of 2026, as he entered Friday's tilt with a .330/.421/.478 slash line, .899 OPS, four homers, 20 RBI, 18 runs, and a stolen base in 115 at-bats for Tampa. Check back on Saturday to see if Diaz is feeling good enough to return to the diamond.

Yandy Diaz Records Five Hits, Drives in Four in Win Over Cardinals

Tampa Bay Rays first baseman/designated hitter Yandy Diaz was at his best in the team's 11-7 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium on Sunday in the series finale, going 5-for-6 with a double, four RBI, and two runs scored as the designated hitter out of the leadoff spot. It's a reminder that the 34-year-old Cuban veteran is a pretty darn good hitter. It was his 10th career game with four hits. Diaz is blazing hot at the plate to begin the 2026 season, going 9-for-16 (.563) in the first three games. He might not provide a ton of power -- he's only had 20-plus homers in two of his 10 big-league seasons -- but there is plenty of value in Diaz having the fourth-best batting average in baseball since 2021. Over that same timeframe, Diaz has the sixth-best on-base percentage. He's not incredibly sexy in fantasy leagues, but he's a glue guy for your lineups in OBP leagues, and he'll also provide a stable batting average and plenty of runs scored at the top of Tampa's lineup.

Yandy Diaz is Returning to the Lineup on Friday

Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz (hand) is back in the lineup ahead of Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Boston Red Sox. Diaz is back in the mix after missing more than a week of action due to left-hand soreness. He has been increasing his workouts in recent days and is feeling good enough to play now. Diaz looks to continue his reliable ways after slashing .300/.366/.482 with 25 home runs and 83 RBI in 150 games last season. His power numbers could see a regression with the move back to Tropicana Field in 2026. The 34-year-old still hits well enough to be a useful corner infield bat for fantasy managers heading into the 2026 campaign.

Yandy Diaz Set to Return to Game Action on Friday

Tampa Bay Rays first baseman/designated hitter Yandy Diaz (hand) is scheduled to return to Spring Training game action on Friday, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Diaz has been out a little over a week due to soreness in his left hand, but it appears as though the issue is not overly serious. Across 681 plate appearances in 2025, Diaz slashed .300/.366/.482 with 25 home runs, 83 RBI, 79 runs scored, and three stolen bases. The 34-year-old has little to prove in Spring Training, so it would make sense if Tampa Bay were taking the stance of being overly cautious with its veteran slugger. Assuming he can return to full health, Diaz should be locked into an everyday role at the top of the Rays lineup in 2026. With a career batting average of .290, Diaz profiles as a reliable corner infield bat for fantasy managers.

Yandy Diaz Remains Out with Hand Soreness

Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz (hand) has been unable to play most of this past week due to injury. According to Marc Topkin, Diaz has been out since Tuesday due to left-hand soreness. Rays' manager Kevin Cash said that Diaz is fine and he'll get a few more days off before returning to the lineup. It's Spring Training, so teams are almost always going to be extremely cautious with even minor issues. This doesn't sound like something that is going to impact Diaz for much longer. Diaz is coming off an excellent season where he slashed .300/.366/.482 with 25 home runs and 83 RBI in 150 games. There will likely be a regression in his power numbers with the move away from Steinbrenner Field. Fantasy managers should still be able to count on Diaz as a reliable bat.
