Jonny DeLuca Will Miss the Rest of the Season

Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Jonny DeLuca (hamstring) will not return to the team this season after suffering a setback in his rehab, according to Rays manager Kevin Cash. DeLuca has been on the injured list with a hamstring injury since early August and suffered a quad strain while working his way back in Triple-A Durham. DeLuca showed some promising upside during the 2024 season, but only played 20 games this year, hitting .333 with no home runs but six stolen bases and a .350 wOBA. He missed time early in the season with a shoulder injury as well, and it isn't clear how the 27-year-old righty fits in with the Rays' future plans in the outfield, where they have several strong prospects. He'll work to come to Spring Training next year fully healthy and ready to contribute, but his 2025 season is unfortunately over.

Jonny DeLuca Resumes Running Progression

Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Jonny DeLuca (hamstring) has resumed a running progression. This is Deluca's second stint on the injured list, with the first being due to a shoulder injury. The Rays fully anticipate that DeLuca will return by the end of the season, and the fact that he's already running again is proof to back up this hope. When he returns, Deluca may be limited to an outfield platoon role. Deluca has been limited to only 20 games this year due to injury, but has played well when healthy. The 27-year-old was slashing .333/.356/.456 with six stolen bases before landing on the injured list. Fantasy managers with an IL spot in deep leagues can continue to stash him for now.

Jonny DeLuca to Land on 10-Day Injured List

The Tampa Bay Rays will place outfielder Jonny DeLuca (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list on Friday with a left-hamstring issue, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. DeLuca suffered the injury in a 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday and had to leave early after going 1-for-3 with a triple. He'll now head to the IL for the second time this year after missing over three months with a strained right shoulder. The 27-year-old speedster has appeared in just 20 games this season, but he has hit an effective .333/.356/.456 with four RBI, five runs scored, and six stolen bases in 59 plate appearances. The Rays could call up outfielder Tristan Peters or Everson Pereira from Triple-A Durham to take DeLuca's roster spot, according to Topkin.

Jonny DeLuca Pulled Early With Hamstring Tightness on Wednesday

Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Jonny DeLuca (hamstring) was removed from Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels in the sixth inning due to left-hamstring tightness, according to Ryan Bass of Bally Sports. Before departing, DeLuca 1-for-3 with a triple before being replaced in center field by Jake Mangum. The 27-year-old should be considered day-to-day for now, but he could require a trip to the injured list if testing shows it's something serious. DeLuca was playing in just his 20th game of the season for the Rays on Wednesday but had seen more playing time over the last week with rookie Chandler Simpson dealing with a finger injury. If DeLuca requires time away, Mangum figures to benefit the most in Tampa's outfield. The Rays have a day off on Thursday before starting a series on Friday against the Mariners in Seattle.

Jonny DeLuca Begins Rehab Assignment

Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Jonny DeLuca (shoulder) has begun a rehab assignment in the Florida Complex League as he works back from a strained right shoulder. The Rays have gone almost the whole season without DeLuca, who last played April 6 and has since suffered multiple setbacks in his rehab. He went 10-for-23 with four stolen bases and four runs scored before going on the IL. Over a much larger sample size in 2024, the 27-year-old batted .217/.278/.331 with six homers, 31 RBI, 29 runs, and 16 steals in 362 trips to the plate.

Jonny DeLuca Resumes Baseball Activities

Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Jonny DeLuca (shoulder) has resumed baseball activities, but hasn't started a minor league rehab assignment yet. DeLuca has been out since early April due to a shoulder injury. It has been a struggle since then with DeLuca suffering multiple setbacks while attempting to rehab. The hope is that DeLuca can begin another rehab assignment within the next week. There is no current timetable for his return to the field. DeLuca has potential to be a contributor in at least deep leagues, but isn't someone that needs to be rostered at the moment.

Jonny DeLuca Begins Rehab Assignment

Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Jonny DeLuca (shoulder) has begun a rehab assignment with the Rays' Florida Complex League affiliate. The 26-year-old has been on the 10-day injured list since early April with a shoulder strain. However, DeLuca suffered a setback, which pushed back his timeline. Earlier in May, DeLuca was cleared to begin hitting off a tee and has now recently joined the FCL to begin his rehab assignment. Given the time he missed, fantasy managers should expect DeLuca to spend at least a few weeks in the minor leagues before returning to action. Last season, DeLuca appeared in 107 games for the Rays and held .217/.278/.331 line with six home runs and 16 stolen bases. Before the injury, DeLuca held a .435 AVG across the first nine games of the season. When he does return to action, he should compete for time in center and right field.

Jonny DeLuca Shut Down For A Few Days

Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Jonny DeLuca (shoulder) experienced some soreness while throwing and swinging and will be shut down for 3-to-5 days, according to manager Kevin Cash. DeLuca was beginning the rehab of his strained right shoulder, but it looks like he may have started a bit too early. The soreness isn't expected to be anything serious, but this will still delay his return to the team. The speedy center fielder was batting .435 with four stolen bases before suffering the injury while making a diving catch. Playing time may be a bit murkier once he does return, as top prospect Chandler Simpson has taken over in center field recently.

Rays Place Jonny DeLuca On 10-Day Injured List With Shoulder Strain

The Tampa Bay Rays placed outfielder Jonny DeLuca (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with a right-shoulder strain and recalled infielder Coco Montes in a corresponding move, according to the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin. It's bad timing, as DeLuca had started off his second season with the Rays strong, going 10-for-23 with a triple, RBI, four stolen bases and four runs scored in his first nine games. It seems unlikely that the 26-year-old outfielder will be ready to return from the IL when he's eligible to be activated on April 17, but hopefully he'll be able to rejoin the major-league roster before the end of April. DeLuca joins Josh Lowe (oblique) and Richie Palacios (finger) on the IL, giving both young outfielders Kameron Misner and Jake Mangum a clear path to regular playing time in the season's first month in Tampa.

Jonny DeLuca Expected To Start In Center Field

According to Adam Berry of MLB.com, Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Jonny DeLuca is expected to begin the season as the team's starting center fielder. Last summer, Jose Siri was the everyday center fielder in Tampa Bay, but he was traded to the New York Mets during the offseason. As a result, DeLuca stands at the top of the depth chart and is expected to open the season as the top option. Across 107 games in Tampa Bay last summer, the Oregon product held a .217/.278/.331 line with 12 doubles, six home runs, and 16 stolen bases. While he did not generate elite hitting metrics, he was a top defender with speed. He placed in the 93rd percentile in outs above average and the 98th percentile in sprint speed. Richie Palacios will likely open the season as the No. 2 option behind DeLuca. If DeLuca has a successful spring training, he could be worth a look in deeper category formats as he has flashed elite speed.
