Tyler Wells Emerging as a Worthy Deep-League Waiver-Wire Target

Across 54 innings (43 games) in 2026, Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tyler Wells has recorded a 2.67 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 53 strikeouts, 10 holds, and four saves. With Orioles closer Ryan Helsley (elbow) on the injured list due to elbow inflammation, Baltimore has utilized multiple relievers in the ninth inning. However, Wells earned the team's most recent save on Friday and may be establishing himself as Baltimore's preferred closer. Wells has notched a strong 19.0% K-BB rate this season. He's also been difficult to square up, as he's allowed just a 31.5% hard-hit rate and 1.00 HR/9. Even if Wells does not see every save chance for Baltimore the rest of the way, he profiles as a reliable source of quality ratios, and his ability to work multiple innings in high-leverage spots puts him in a position to steal wins. Particularly in deeper leagues, Wells looks like a worthy waiver wire target.

Tyler Wells the Closer to Roster in Baltimore

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tyler Wells appears to be the closer to roster in fantasy baseball leagues with Ryan Helsley (elbow) still on the injured list, and Wells is only rostered in 16% of Yahoo leagues. The 31-year-old veteran and former starting pitcher is 2-2 on the year with a 2.72 ERA (3.43 FIP), 0.98 WHIP, three saves, 53 strikeouts, and only 13 walks in 53 relief innings for the O's. Veteran right-hander Andrew Kittredge has Baltimore's most recent save (on Wednesday), but he also has two losses within the last week and has not been as sharp as Wells. Wells' last save came on July 17 against the Houston Astros, but all three of his saves this year have come in July, a month in which he has allowed just two earned runs with four walks, 13 strikeouts, and a win in 13 appearances out of the bullpen. He's never been a dominant pitcher in terms of strikeouts, but his control is solid, and he does have a 25.5% strikeout rate in 2026, which is his highest mark since his rookie campaign in 2021. Fantasy managers searching for saves should consider Wells.

Orioles Turn to Tyler Wells for Friday's Save, Emerging as Priority Closer to Roster

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tyler Wells picked up his third save of the season on Friday, allowing one hit and one walk while collecting a strikeout in a scoreless ninth inning of his team's 3-2 win over the Houston Astros. The 31-year-old appears to be grabbing hold of the full-time closer role in Baltimore, as he's earned three saves while allowing just one earned run across eight innings (seven games) in July. Wells' overall numbers for the year are strong as well, as he's pitched to a 2.96 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 47 strikeouts across 45 2/3 innings. He's struck out 25.8% of the batters he's faced while logging a stellar 6.0% walk rate. Fantasy managers in need of saves should consider Wells a priority waiver wire target.

Tyler Wells Still the Best Bet for Saves in Baltimore?

Baltimore Orioles relief pitcher Tyler Wells picked up saves on July 3 and 4 after Ryan Helsley (right elbow discomfort) returned to the injured list. He carried a 3.02 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and 46:10 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 44 2/3 innings into the break, giving him the best overall profile in Baltimore's current committee. Andrew Kittredge has complicated things. He converted back-to-back saves on July 9 and 10, while Wells earned a win on July 9 and finished a 6-1 victory two nights later. There is no clean handcuff here, but Wells still offers strong ratios, strikeouts, and multi-inning flexibility at only 17% rostered on Yahoo. RotoBaller ranks him 41st for Week 16 and recommends him in 12-team leagues, compared with a 15-team recommendation for Kittredge. Wells remains the better speculative add, though managers should expect Baltimore to mix and match.

Tyler Wells Converts Friday Save, Worth a Speculative Add?

Right-handed reliever Tyler Wells got the Baltimore Orioles' first save chance after Ryan Helsley (elbow) returned to the 15-day injured list, and he handled it cleanly. Wells retired the Cincinnati Reds in order on 10 pitches in a 3-0 win Friday, July 3, striking out one for his first save since 2023. Rico Garcia covered the sixth and seventh before Yennier Cano worked the eighth. The outing puts Wells in the mix, but it does not make him Baltimore's temporary closer. Andrew Kittredge had pitched Tuesday and Wednesday, while RotoBaller ranked Wells behind Kittredge and Garcia before the save. Wells owns a 3.10 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and 43 strikeouts over 40 2/3 innings, making him a speculative add in 15-team saves leagues. His 3% Yahoo roster rate makes him easy to find, but managers in shallower formats can wait to see who gets the next chance.

Tyler Wells Scheduled to Start for Orioles on Tuesday

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tyler Wells (elbow) is scheduled to come off the 60-day injured list and start against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday. Wells hasn't taken the mound in the majors since April 12, 2024, as he was shut down with elbow troubles and had to have internal-brace surgery on his UCL. Almost 15 months after going under the knife in June 2024, he'll come back to finish out the season as part of a six-man Orioles rotation. The 31-year-old made five Triple-A rehab starts this summer and notched a terrific 2.70 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP and 23:6 K:BB in 23 1/3 innings. Wells hasn't been as successful in the majors, where he has totaled 95 appearances (46 starts) and recorded a decent 4.06 ERA with a 1.05 WHIP, 8.28 K/9, and 2.35 BB/9 over 294 2/3 frames.

Tyler Wells to Return Next Week, Orioles Going to Six-Man Rotation

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tyler Wells (elbow) was outstanding in his final rehab start with Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday. Wells fired 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball, allowed six hits, and totaled five strikeouts against one walk on 90 pitches (59 strikes). The 31-year-old is in line to make his 2025 Orioles debut next week and take a major league mound for the first time since April 12, 2024. Wells, who owns a career 4.06 ERA in 95 appearances (46 starts), has spent 14 months working back from the UCL surgery he underwent in June 2024. With Wells returning to join fellow starters Trevor Rogers, Tomoyuki Sugano, Kyle Bradish, Cade Povich, and Dean Kremer, the Orioles will finish the season with a six-man rotation, according to interim manager Tony Mansolino. "Nobody will pitch on regular rest the rest of the year," Mansolino announced.

Tyler Wells Goes 5 2/3 Innings in Latest Rehab Start

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tyler Wells made his fourth minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday and allowed two earned runs on six hits (one homer) while walking one and striking out four in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss against Triple-A Charlotte. Wells continues to work his way back from UCL recontrusction surgery and is expected to need one more rehab start before rejoining the major-league roster to make his 2025 season debut. However, with right-hander Kyle Bradish (elbow) also close to making his return to the O's, it's possible that the 30-year-old Wells will handle a bulk-relief role out of the bullpen when he's cleared to come off the 60-day injured list. Wells should most likely remain on the waiver wire in 12-team fantasy leagues when he returns. He has a 4.06 ERA and 1.04 WHIP with a 22.9% strikeout rate and 6.5% walk rate in his four big-league seasons.

Tyler Wells to Make Two More Rehab Starts

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tyler Wells (elbow) will make two more minor-league rehab starts before he's reinstated from the 60-day injured list, according to MASN's Roch Kubatko. Wells has not pitched for the Orioles all year after having an internal-brace procedure on his right UCL back in June of 2024. The 30-year-old made his fourth minor-league rehab start last Friday and is nearing his 2025 debut, although fantasy managers would be better off targeting right-hander Kyle Bradish (elbow), who is also on the cusp of his season debut after recovering from Tommy John surgery. With Bradish set to return before Wells, it's possible that Baltimore uses Wells out of th bullpen to close out their disappointing season. Wells has a 4.06 ERA (4.54 FIP), 1.04 WHIP and 271:77 K:BB in 294 2/3 innings in his 95 MLB outings (46 starts) since debuting for the O's in 2021.

Tyler Wells Goes Five Innings in Triple-A Rehab Start

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tyler Wells (elbow) lasted five innings in his third Triple-A rehab start on Friday. Wells allowed three earned runs on six hits and posted five strikeouts against one walk on 77 pitches (52 strikes). He's expected to make at least one more start with Triple-A Norfolk before pitching for the Orioles for the first time since April 2024. Wells underwent elbow surgery in June 2024 and has spent over a year recovering. He was a solid part of the O's rotation from 2022-23, a 48-appearance span in which he made 43 starts and logged a 3.93 ERA with 7.8 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 in 222 1/3 innings. With the 30-year-old continuing to build up his pitch count in the minors, he'll be a candidate to rejoin Baltimore's rotation when he comes back.
