Tyler Wells Scheduled to Start for Orioles on Tuesday

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tyler Wells (elbow) is scheduled to come off the 60-day injured list and start against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday. Wells hasn't taken the mound in the majors since April 12, 2024, as he was shut down with elbow troubles and had to have internal-brace surgery on his UCL. Almost 15 months after going under the knife in June 2024, he'll come back to finish out the season as part of a six-man Orioles rotation. The 31-year-old made five Triple-A rehab starts this summer and notched a terrific 2.70 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP and 23:6 K:BB in 23 1/3 innings. Wells hasn't been as successful in the majors, where he has totaled 95 appearances (46 starts) and recorded a decent 4.06 ERA with a 1.05 WHIP, 8.28 K/9, and 2.35 BB/9 over 294 2/3 frames.

Tyler Wells to Return Next Week, Orioles Going to Six-Man Rotation

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tyler Wells (elbow) was outstanding in his final rehab start with Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday. Wells fired 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball, allowed six hits, and totaled five strikeouts against one walk on 90 pitches (59 strikes). The 31-year-old is in line to make his 2025 Orioles debut next week and take a major league mound for the first time since April 12, 2024. Wells, who owns a career 4.06 ERA in 95 appearances (46 starts), has spent 14 months working back from the UCL surgery he underwent in June 2024. With Wells returning to join fellow starters Trevor Rogers, Tomoyuki Sugano, Kyle Bradish, Cade Povich, and Dean Kremer, the Orioles will finish the season with a six-man rotation, according to interim manager Tony Mansolino. "Nobody will pitch on regular rest the rest of the year," Mansolino announced.

Tyler Wells Goes 5 2/3 Innings in Latest Rehab Start

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tyler Wells made his fourth minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday and allowed two earned runs on six hits (one homer) while walking one and striking out four in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss against Triple-A Charlotte. Wells continues to work his way back from UCL recontrusction surgery and is expected to need one more rehab start before rejoining the major-league roster to make his 2025 season debut. However, with right-hander Kyle Bradish (elbow) also close to making his return to the O's, it's possible that the 30-year-old Wells will handle a bulk-relief role out of the bullpen when he's cleared to come off the 60-day injured list. Wells should most likely remain on the waiver wire in 12-team fantasy leagues when he returns. He has a 4.06 ERA and 1.04 WHIP with a 22.9% strikeout rate and 6.5% walk rate in his four big-league seasons.

Tyler Wells to Make Two More Rehab Starts

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tyler Wells (elbow) will make two more minor-league rehab starts before he's reinstated from the 60-day injured list, according to MASN's Roch Kubatko. Wells has not pitched for the Orioles all year after having an internal-brace procedure on his right UCL back in June of 2024. The 30-year-old made his fourth minor-league rehab start last Friday and is nearing his 2025 debut, although fantasy managers would be better off targeting right-hander Kyle Bradish (elbow), who is also on the cusp of his season debut after recovering from Tommy John surgery. With Bradish set to return before Wells, it's possible that Baltimore uses Wells out of th bullpen to close out their disappointing season. Wells has a 4.06 ERA (4.54 FIP), 1.04 WHIP and 271:77 K:BB in 294 2/3 innings in his 95 MLB outings (46 starts) since debuting for the O's in 2021.

Tyler Wells Goes Five Innings in Triple-A Rehab Start

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tyler Wells (elbow) lasted five innings in his third Triple-A rehab start on Friday. Wells allowed three earned runs on six hits and posted five strikeouts against one walk on 77 pitches (52 strikes). He's expected to make at least one more start with Triple-A Norfolk before pitching for the Orioles for the first time since April 2024. Wells underwent elbow surgery in June 2024 and has spent over a year recovering. He was a solid part of the O's rotation from 2022-23, a 48-appearance span in which he made 43 starts and logged a 3.93 ERA with 7.8 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 in 222 1/3 innings. With the 30-year-old continuing to build up his pitch count in the minors, he'll be a candidate to rejoin Baltimore's rotation when he comes back.

Tyler Wells Pitches Well in Third Rehab Start

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Tyler Wells (elbow) tossed four shutout innings for Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday in his third appearance of his rehab stint. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out five. The 30-year-old hasn't allowed a run in any of his 8 rehab innings, and he built up to 52 pitches in this one. He hasn't pitched all season while recovering from a UCL surgery that sidelined him for most of 2024, too. Wells' last significant workload came in 2023, when he posted a 3.64 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 118 innings. He'll likely need at least one more rehab start if the Orioles plan to make him a starting pitcher for the remainder of the season.

Tyler Wells Throws 49 Pitches in Triple-A Rehab Start

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tyler Wells (elbow) made his second rehab start and first at the Triple-A level on Tuesday. Wells lasted 2 1/3 scoreless innings with three hits allowed and four strikeouts against two walks. The 30-year-old built up to 49 pitches (31 strikes) after tossing 22 in a previous rehab start in Double-A ball. Wells is likely to need at least a couple of more starts before he rejoins the Orioles. He last pitched in the majors in April 2024 and has since been recovering from elbow surgery. He threw a career-high 118 2/3 innings over 25 appearances (20 starts) with a 3.64 ERA, 117 strikeouts, and 34 walks in 2023.

Tyler Wells Successful in First Rehab Start

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Tyler Wells (elbow) had his first rehab start for Double-A Chesapeake on Wednesday. The 30-year-old threw two perfect innings with one strikeout. Wells had Tommy John surgery in June 2024 and is trying to work his way into the Orioles' starting rotation. He threw 15 of his 22 pitches for strikes, which is a good sign as control is one of the last aspects of pitching that comes back after Tommy John surgery. Wells has not pitched in an MLB game since April 2024 but was a consistent pitcher back in 2023, pitching to the tune of a 3.64 ERA, 0.99 WHIP over 119 innings, starting 20 games for the Orioles. Wells could return to the majors by late August.

Tyler Wells to Begin Rehab Assignment Wednesday

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Tyler Wells (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Chesapeake on Wednesday. It'll be Wells' first time pitching in a game since April 2024, when he suffered an elbow injury that required UCL surgery. Barring setbacks, the Orioles expect the 30-year-old to return to the majors in late August. Wells made 95 appearances (46 starts) with the O's from 2021-24 and posted a 4.06 ERA with an impressive 1.05 WHIP, 8.28 K/9, and 2.35 BB/9 in 294 2/3 innings.

Tyler Wells To Throw A Bullpen On Friday

Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said that right-hander Tyler Wells (elbow) will throw a bullpen session on Friday. It will be the first time that Wells has thrown off a mound since he had UCL surgery and an internal-brace procedure on his right elbow in June of 2024. It will be a big step for the 30-year-old hurler, but his return to a big-league mound in 2025 is a ways off and most likely won't come until the second half of the season. Fantasy managers in mixed single-year leagues can continue to leave him to the waiver wire. It's also unclear if Wells will have a rotation spot waiting for him in Baltimore when he is activated from the injured list. He made only three starts last year before being shut down but had a career-best 3.64 ERA and 0.99 WHIP with a career-high 117 strikeouts and 34 walks in 118 2/3 innings over 25 outings (20 starts) in 2023. At best, he'll be a deep-mixed streamer later this season.
