The Seattle Mariners acquired right-hander Casey Legumina from the Cincinnati Reds on Monday in exchange for cash considerations, executive vice president and general manager of baseball operations Justin Hollander announced. In a corresponding move, the team designated left-hander Jhonathan Diaz for assignment to make room for Legumina on the 40-man roster. Legumina, 27, was recently designated for assignment by the Reds and will join Seattle in 2025 after posting an ugly 8.68 ERA and 1.82 WHIP with seven strikeouts and two walks in 9 1/3 relief innings. He has a 6.95 ERA and 1.91 WHIP in 22 relief innings for the Reds over the last two seasons and will merely serve as relief depth for the Mariners heading into this season. Expect Legumina to open the 2025 campaign at Triple-A Tacoma.
According to the team, the Cincinnati Reds have designated right-handed pitcher Casey Legumina for assignment. This transaction opened a roster spot for outfielder Austin Hays, who the team officially signed on Thursday. Legumina has logged 22 innings in the major leagues over the past two seasons. During this small stint, the right-hander held a 6.95 ERA with a 1.91 WHIP. Last summer at Triple-A, Legumina posted a 3.24 ERA with a 1.10 WHIP across 58 1/3 innings. He struck out 57 batters while allowing 18 free passes. This was a nice improvement compared to the 4.83 ERA and 1.67 WHIP he held during his first look at Triple-A in the 2023 campaign. Fantasy managers should expect the former 11th-round pick to open the 2025 season at the Triple-A level.
Cincinnati Reds rookie right-hander Casey Legumina (head, shoulder) threw a side session on Tuesday that went well, according to manager David Bell. Legumina is currently in Arizona on a throwing program, but he had a mishap on July 18 when he was hit on the head by an errant throw. He skipped his throwing session due to a headache but was expected to be OK. Bell thinks Legumina might need a week to 10 days on a minor-league rehab assignment before he's activated from the injured list. The 26-year-old reliever allowed 11 runs (eight earned) on 15 hits while walking three and striking out 11 in 11 2/3 innings in his first 10 appearances out of the bullpen in the big leagues earlier this year.
Cincinnati Reds reliever Casey Legumina (ankle) landed on the 15-day IL on Sunday. The right-hander exited Saturday's meeting with the Marlins after taking a comebacker off the right ankle, resulting in a contusion. Legumina hasn't done much for fantasy managers in 2023, posting a 1-0 record with a 4.35 ERA and nine strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings. Cincinnati also announced that Nick Lodolo (calf) would join Legumina on the injured list.
