He only went 2 2/3 frames in his final regular-season start on Sept. 27 at the Philadelphia Phillies, when he allowed four earned runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout. Martinez knows the Yankees well, having faced them three times already this year. He was strong against the Bombers, posting a 2.16 ERA and 1.44 WHIP with 12 strikeouts and five walks in 16 2/3 innings pitched. In 11 1/3 career postseason innings (one start), Martinez has allowed five runs (four earned) with two walks, 11 strikeouts, one loss, and three holds.

Additionally, the Tigers have also shown interest in other proven options on the open market, such as Jose Quintana and Chris Bassitt. The Tigers are likely looking to add one more stable option to the back of their rotation ahead of spring training. Martinez spent the entire 2025 campaign with the Reds and was deployed as both a starter and a reliever. Through 165 2/3 innings, Martinez held a 4.45 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP. He struck out only 116 batters but generated a 4.04 xERA, suggesting he could see some minor positive regression during the upcoming season. If Martinez were to agree to terms with the Tigers, he would likely bounce between the rotation and a long-relief role, making him only worth targeting in deeper 15-team/AL-only leagues.

After the addition of Littell and with Hunter Greene (groin) nearing a return from the IL, there's a good chance we never see Martinez in a starting role the rest of the year in Cincy. Although his strikeout rate should improve in relief, there's not much to like about the 34-year-old outside a starting role with his 17.8% K rate in 2025.

Martinez allowed his first hit in the ninth inning, where he was pulled at 112 pitches. The righty struck out six and walked two and showcased all six of his pitches in this one, generating 14 whiffs and a 35% CSW. Martinez has been up and down this year after a strong 2024 and was actually demoted to the bullpen last week after a few rough outings. This was a nice way to re-enter the rotation, though, and he has surely earned himself another start or two with his performance. The 34-year-old now has a 5-8 record to go with a 4.12 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 69 strikeouts over 94 innings. He's more of a streamer right now and should only be used in the right matchups, but he does have the talent to be more than that. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday in Boston against a struggling Red Sox lineup, where he will have some streaming appeal.

Martinez will take a 3.70 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 53/16 K/BB ratio into his next start versus the Detroit Tigers.
