Nick Martinez Moving Back into Rotation

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Nick Martinez is slated to take the mound for Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Martinez shifted to the bullpen after the team acquired Zack Littell at the trade deadline. However, Martinez will return to the rotation with Nick Lodolo (finger) being placed on the injured list. Most recently, Martinez tossed 2.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits in relief of Lodolo on Monday. This season, Martinez has a 4.66 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and a 93/31 K/BB ratio across 25 games (22 starts) with the Reds this season. He should have some low-end streaming appeal for Saturday's outing.

Nick Martinez Heading to the Bullpen

Cincinnati Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall said that with the addition of right-hander Zack Littell to the starting rotation, right-hander Nick Martinez will move to the bullpen. Littell, Martinez and rookie Chase Burns all give the Reds depth and versatility down the stretch with the ability to pitch in multiple roles. All but two of Martinez's 24 appearances for the Reds this year have been in a starting role, and he's gone 9-9 with a 4.61 ERA (4.09 FIP) and 1.21 WHIP with 93 strikeouts and 31 walks in 127 innings pitched. After the addition of Littell and with Hunter Greene (groin) nearing a return from the IL, there's a good chance we never see Martinez in a starting role the rest of the year in Cincy. Although his strikeout rate should improve in relief, there's not much to like about the 34-year-old outside a starting role with his 17.8% K rate in 2025.

Nick Martinez Flirts With No-Hitter, Settles for Win

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Nick Martinez was excellent on Friday, tossing eight innings of one-hit baseball against the San Diego Padres in an 8-1 win. Martinez allowed his first hit in the ninth inning, where he was pulled at 112 pitches. The righty struck out six and walked two and showcased all six of his pitches in this one, generating 14 whiffs and a 35% CSW. Martinez has been up and down this year after a strong 2024 and was actually demoted to the bullpen last week after a few rough outings. This was a nice way to re-enter the rotation, though, and he has surely earned himself another start or two with his performance. The 34-year-old now has a 5-8 record to go with a 4.12 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 69 strikeouts over 94 innings. He's more of a streamer right now and should only be used in the right matchups, but he does have the talent to be more than that. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday in Boston against a struggling Red Sox lineup, where he will have some streaming appeal.

Nick Martinez Posts Quality Start on Saturday

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Nick Martinez bounced back nicely on the mound during Saturday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Last start, Martinez gave up five earned runs to the Chicago Cubs. Martinez looked much better on the mound during Saturday's start. He tossed six innings, allowing one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts in the win. The only damage done to Martinez was a solo home run off the bat of Eugenio Suarez. Martinez will take a 3.70 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 53/16 K/BB ratio into his next start versus the Detroit Tigers.

Nick Martinez Tosses Seven Scoreless Innings

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Nick Martinez threw seven shutout frames and earned the win in a 7-1 victory over the White Sox on Thursday. He allowed two hits and struck out three. This was a nice rebound after allowing 10 hits in his previous outing, and this was his fourth straight start of at least six innings pitched. The veteran now has a 3.66 ERA on the season with 40 strikeouts and 11 walks in 51 innings. He won't blow you away with strikeout totals, but he's proven to be an innings-eater with decent enough ratios to be rostered in fantasy. He's lined up for a nice matchup in his next time out against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Nick Martinez Looks Impressive On Monday

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Nick Martinez looked good on the mound during Monday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The right-hander gave up a run early, but settled down nicely after that. Martinez tossed six innings, allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out three batters in the win. Martinez hasn't been great on the mound this season, but has allowed two earned runs or less in each of his last two starts. He'll take a 4.68 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 26/11 K/BB ratio into his next start against the Washington Nationals. Martinez is worth a look in deep leagues or NL-only formats ahead of that start.

Nick Martinez Signs Qualifying Offer With Reds

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Nick Martinez accepted the team's qualifying offer of $21.05 million, returning to the team for a second season. Martinez made a handful of starts in the first month of the season in 2024, but worked almost exclusively out of the bullpen until August when he returned to the rotation. The 34-year-old had stronger numbers overall in 53 1/3 IP as a reliever (1.86 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 19.6 K-BB%) than in 89 IP as a starter (3.84 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 15.8% K-BB%), however, as a starter in September the righty went 4-1 with a 0.83 ERA, 0.67 WHIP, and a 21.8% K-BB% which led to being named MLB's N.L. Pitcher of the Month. Fantasy managers should take note in the spring as to whether or not the Reds plan to use him as a starter again as he could be a potential late-round value if he were able to take that momentum into 2025.

Nick Martinez Expected To Accept Qualifying Offer

Free-agent right-handed pitcher Nick Martinez is expected to accept the Cincinnati Reds' qualifying offer worth $21.05 million, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. This past summer, Martinez logged a career-high 142 1/3 innings and is now expected to return to Cincinnati. Last summer, the right-hander held a strong 3.10 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and a 18:116 BB:K. The 34-year-old posted a stellar 3.2% walk rate, 5.1% barrel rate, and a 30.5% hard-hit rate, which were among the highest marks among qualified pitchers last season. Seeing Martinez show great command as a starter makes him an intriguing option later in drafts this offseason, especially if you are looking to boost your team's WHIP ratio.

Reds Give Nick Martinez A Qualifying Offer

The Cincinnati Reds extended a $21.05 million qualifying offer to free-agent right-hander Nick Martinez on Monday, according to sources. He already declined a $12 million player option last week. Martinez and the Reds actually discussed a multi-year contract extension before this point, but neither side could agree to anything, and now the 34-year-old veteran swingman is on the open market. If Martinez rejects the offer and signs with another club this winter, the Reds will receive draft-pick compensation. He had a great first season in Cincy in 2024, going 10-7 with a career-best 3.10 ERA (3.21 FIP), a 1.03 WHIP and a career-high 116 strikeouts in 142 1/3 innings over 42 appearances (16 starts). Martinez might see plenty of money on the open market given his versatility, but it also wouldn't be a surprise if he accepted the one-year qualifying offer to stay with the Reds.

Nick Martinez Headed To Free Agency

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Nick Martinez opted out of his contract and will test free agency according to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. Martinez is coming off the best season of his seven-year MLB career where he held a solid 3.10 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, with a 18:116 BB:K ratio. Martinez was deployed as both a starter and reliever but took significant strides this summer. He showcased elite command with a 3.2% walk rate and was able to limit hard contact at a strong 30.5% hard-hit rate and 5.1% barrel rate. Martinez will likely continue to operate as a back-end starter and could be worth a look in deeper formats this upcoming season given his progression.
