Free-agent right-hander Brandon Kintzler, who hasn't played in 2022, signed a minor league deal with the San Diego Padres earlier this week. He's hoping to help the major league team at some point in September. Kintzler last played for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2021. He was a former All-Star with the Minnesota Twins and has played for six teams in his 12 MLB seasons. The 38-year-old had a 6.37 ERA, 1.79 WHIP, 22 strikeouts and eight walks in 29 2/3 relief innings last year with the Phillies. Kintzler has 61 career saves and will provide the Friars with some bullpen depth and experience if he earns a promotion to the big leagues, but he's unlikely to be on the fantasy radar to close out the season.
The Philadelphia Phillies activated relief pitcher Brandon Kintzler (neck) from the injured list on Thursday. Kintzler has pitched to an 8.50 ERA in 20 appearances spanning 18 innings for the Phillies this season. Although he's struggled, the reliever could be worth a speculative add if you are in need of saves. Philadelphia's bullpen has struggled mightily as a group, and with Hector Neris no longer serving as closer, Kintzler could be a candidate to see some save opportunities. The veteran has 61 career saves, including 12 last season with the Miami Marlins. Fellow reliever Neftali Feliz was designated for assignment to make room for Kintzler on the active roster. Feliz appeared in two games and gave up four hits, four earned runs, a home run and a walk while also hitting a batter in one inning. He also struck out a pair.
Brandon Kintzler Makes Phillies Opening Day Roster
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Brandon Kintzler was told he made the Phillies Opening Day roster, according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki. Kintzler has pitched to a sub-three ERA in two straight seasons and will provide depth at the back end of the bullpen in his first season in Philly. The 36-year-old has closing experience with the Twins having accumulated 46 saves across the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Kintzler seems to be behind Hector Neris, Archie Bradley, and Jose Alvarado in the Phillies bullpen and, given his lack of strikeouts, doesn't hold much fantasy value unless he finds himself in the close role at some point.
The Philadelphia Phillies signed free-agent relief pitcher Brandon Kintzler to a minor league deal on Wednesday, according to a source. It's a one-year deal for $3 million if Kintzler makes the team out of spring training, plus incentives. Kintzler turned down a major league offer to return to the Miami Marlins, but he can make more in Philly if he makes the team. The 36-year-old had his $4 million option declined by the Fish despite the fact that he was their best reliever in the 2020 season with a 2.22 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 12 saves in 24 1/3 innings. He was also great with the Cubs in 2019, posting a 2.68 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with one save in 57 innings. Kintzler doesn't have typical high-leverage stuff -- just a 6.3 career K/9 -- but he's been effective with a 3.31 ERA in 11 big-league seasons and should have a good chance to secure a bullpen spot in a setup role ahead of co-closers Hector Neris and Archie Bradley.
Marlins Still Haven't Made An Offer To Brandon Kintzler
The Miami Marlins have yet to make an offer to free-agent relief pitcher Brandon Kintzler. Kintzler spent the abbreviated 2020 season as the Marlins closer, saving 12 games while posting a 2.22 ERA. He doesn't have the typical closer stuff, but he's been a successful reliever for years at this point. The Marlins signed Anthony Bass and will have Yimi Garcia returning, so they may feel like they are OK at the back end of the bullpen. Kintzler will almost certainly find a team before Opening Day, but he's more likely to work in a middle-relief or setup role in 2021.
Brandon Kintzler Earns His 10th Save Of The Season
Miami Marlins closer Brandon Kintzler earned his 10th save of the season in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Washington Nationals. Kintzler tossed a scoreless seventh inning, but he certainly made it interesting, allowing two hits and a walk. Kintztler isn't a huge strikeout numbers closer, but he tends to get the job done. He's posted a 2.53 ERA so far this season.
Miami Marlins closer Brandon Kintzler blew his second consecutive save on Monday, but ended up earning the win when the Marlins beat the Braves in extra innings. Kintzler started the season with nine straight saves, but he's now blown two in a row. On Monday, he allowed a run on two hits and two walks. Never a guy with strikeout stuff, Kintzler relies on ground balls to be effective, but he's been giving up a few long fly outs lately. He should be out of this slump soon, but may need a couple of days off. Brad Boxberger is the next guy up in the Marlins bullpen.
Miami Marlins closer Brandon Kintzler got just one out on Saturday, but that's all it took for him to earn his ninth save of the season. The Marlins had a big lead, but reliever Brandon Leibrandt was struggling in the ninth inning, leading to manager Don Mattingly turning to Kintzler with two outs and two runners on base. Kintzler threw just two pitches before inducing a game-ending ground out. Kintzler's ERA is at 2.45 and he has converted every one of his save opportunities.
Miami Marlins closer Brandon Kintzler saved his fifth game of the season in Game 2 of Saturday's double header against the Washington Nationals. Kintzler tossed a scoreless ninth inning, allowing a hit and a walk. The Nationals ended up with the go-ahead run at the plate in the ninth inning, but Kintzler was able to shut it down and lock up a win for the fish team.
Miami Marlins closer Brandon Kintzler picked up his fourth save of the season on Friday, tossing a perfect ninth inning to lock down a 3-2 win over the Washington Nationals. Kintzler coughed up a pair of runs on a two-run shot in his last outing, but he looked solid again in this one. He'll take a 3.86 ERA into his next appearance.
