Robert Garcia, Chris Martin to Share Closer Duties in Texas?

Texas Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said on Monday that the closer position will "depend on the situation," according to Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News. The skipper also said that he's comfortable with relievers Robert Garcia and Chris Martin in the ninth inning, but also said that "there's a chance you see a couple different guys there." This isn't exactly what you want to hear if you invested in Garcia as a late-round closing option in deeper fantasy leagues. In addition to Garcia and Martin, Schumaker could opt to use Cole Winn or Josh Sborz in high-leverage situations out of the bullpen late in games. Garcia, a 29-year-old lefty, figures to be the favorite in 2025 for save opportunities after he led the team with nine saves, a 2.95 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 68:22 K:BB in 64 innings pitched in his third year in the majors. Garcia is still the odds-on favorite to be Texas' preferred closing option, but this news makes him less attractive in what could evolve into a committee.

Robert Garcia, Chris Martin the Front-Runners for Saves in Texas

Texas Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said that relievers Robert Garcia and Chris Martin are the front-runners to receive most of the save chances to start the 2026 season, according to Jeff Wilson of DLLS Sports. Alexis Diaz could be another option to close out games, but the Rangers want to see how he performs in spring training games first. Garcia, 29, went 4-8 in 2025 with a 2.95 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, the first nine saves of his career, 68 strikeouts, and 22 walks in 64 relief innings. Shawn Armstrong and Luke Jackson tied Garcia for the team lead in saves last year, but both Armstrong and Jackson are gone, potentially giving Garcia the leg up as the Rangers' primary closer this year. Martin, 39, had a nice 2.98 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, two saves, and a 43:8 K:BB in 42 1/3 frames for Texas last season. This has the makings of a committee approach, so fantasy managers shouldn't invest too much into either Garcia or Martin.

Rangers Bring Back Chris Martin on One-Year Deal

Free-agent righty reliever Chris Martin has agreed to a one-year deal with the Texas Rangers on Tuesday. Martin, 39, was effective in 2025, posting a 2.98 ERA (3.11 SIERA) and a 24.7% strikeout rate over 42 1/3 innings. He recorded two saves and 13 holds last season and could see a few matchup-based closing chances again in 2026 because the incumbent closer, Robert Garcia, is a lefty. However, the Rangers also recently signed Alexis Diaz, so fantasy managers should take a wait-and-see approach before drafting any of the Rangers' relievers.

Red Sox Could Reunite With Chris Martin

The Boston Red Sox could reunite with veteran right-handed reliever Chris Martin, who plans to pitch next season, a source told Chris Cotillo of Mass Live. Martin will be heading into his age-40 season in 2026, but he still wants to pitch, and Boston is interested. He was great in Beantown in 2023-24 with a 2.16 ERA, but he finished this past season on the injured list with thoracic outlet syndrome. Before getting hurt in 2025, Martin was solid for the Texas Rangers, posting a 2.98 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, two saves, 43 strikeouts, and eight walks in 42 1/3 innings pitched in relief. If Martin were to return to Boston, he'd most likely be in line to pitch in a high-leverage setup role in front of left-handed closer Aroldis Chapman. Martin had five saves in his two seasons with the BoSox. In 10 big-league seasons, he's sporting a 25.2% strikeout rate and an elite 3.3% walk rate.

Chris Martin to Attempt PFP's Again

Texas Rangers right-hander Chris Martin (calf) will try to go through PFPs (pitchers' fielding practice) before Wednesday's game against the Kansas City Royals. Martin tried this on August 13 but suffered a setback with his left calf strain and has been on the injured list since July 21. Martin is still likely to need at least a couple rehab appearances before being activated from the IL. When healthy, the 39-year-old is one of the higher leverage bullpen arms for the Rangers and is having a solid season with 36 strikeouts over 34 innings, a 2.36 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and two saves. Martin could be a candidate to close for the Rangers upon his return from the IL.

Chris Martin Suffers From Calf Pain in Live Bullpen Session

Texas Rangers relief pitcher Chris Martin (calf) felt pain in his left calf while throwing a live bullpen on Tuesday and will pause his rehab ramp-up, per Dallas News' Shawn McFarland. Martin, who has been on the injured list since July 20, was progressing through regular bullpen sessions and training, but felt irritation when advancing to more strenuous activities. The 39-year-old was putting together a solid season before his injury, collecting 12 holds with a 2.36 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP, and a 25.7% strikeout rate in 34 1/3 innings pitched. Fantasy managers will have to wait for another update, although Martin was only offering fantasy value in saves-plus-holds leagues, given his role.

Chris Martin Scheduled to Face Hitters Tuesday

Texas Rangers reliever Chris Martin (calf) threw a bullpen session on Aug. 10 and is scheduled to face hitters in batting practice on Tuesday. The 39-year-old right-hander hasn't pitched in the majors since he suffered a left-calf strain in a 2-1 defeat to the Detroit Tigers on July 20. Martin took the loss in that game, but he was one of the Rangers' most reliable relievers before he landed on the shelf. Across 34 1/3 innings, Martin has recorded a 2.36 ERA with a 1.14 WHIP, 36:6 K:BB, 12 holds, and two saves. The playoff-contending Rangers are hoping that he'll rejoin their bullpen later this month.

Chris Martin Throws Bullpen Session

Texas Rangers relief pitcher Chris Martin (calf) threw a successful bullpen session on Friday. Martin continues to work his way back from a left calf strain that has sidelined him since late July. Barring any setbacks, Martin is likely to go on a minor league rehab assignment following this bullpen session. Martin holds a 2.36 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and a 36/6 K/BB ratio across 34.1 innings this season. He'll hopefully be able to get back in the mix before the end of August. However, Martin doesn't see a ton of save chances in Texas, so his fantasy value is limited.

Chris Martin Placed On 15-Day Injured List Monday, Out 4-6 Weeks

Texas Rangers relief pitcher Chris Martin (calf) was placed on the 15-day injured list on Monday with a left calf strain, per the team's official communications X account. The 39-year-old left Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Tigers after a disappointing performance. Manager Bruce Bochy said that Martin will miss four-to-six weeks. He has been a consistent arm out of the Rangers' bullpen and a solid fantasy option in saves-plus-holds leagues, racking up two saves and 12 holds with a 2.36 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP, and a 25.7% strikeout rate in 34 1/3 innings pitched. The Rangers have cycled through relievers for save opportunities this season, and Martin has barely been in the rotation, so fantasy managers can still turn to other relievers in their bullpen for fantasy purposes.

Chris Martin Suffers Calf Strain, Takes Loss on Sunday

Texas Rangers reliever Chris Martin (calf) left early in a 2-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday after suffering a calf strain, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. It truly added injury to insult for Martin, who fell to 1-6 on the season after giving up an earned run on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. Martin's injury forced him to exit in the top of the eighth after allowing a go-ahead RBI single to Matt Vierling. He's likely ticketed for a trip to the 15-day injured list, according to Grant. If Martin does go on the IL, it'll cost Texas a dependable late-game option for at least two weeks. The 39-year-old has pitched to a sterling 2.36 ERA with 36:6 K:BB, 12 holds, and two saves over 34 1/3 innings.
