Robert Garcia, Chris Martin to Share Closer Duties in Texas?

Texas Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said on Monday that the closer position will "depend on the situation," according to Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News. The skipper also said that he's comfortable with relievers Robert Garcia and Chris Martin in the ninth inning, but also said that "there's a chance you see a couple different guys there." This isn't exactly what you want to hear if you invested in Garcia as a late-round closing option in deeper fantasy leagues. In addition to Garcia and Martin, Schumaker could opt to use Cole Winn or Josh Sborz in high-leverage situations out of the bullpen late in games. Garcia, a 29-year-old lefty, figures to be the favorite in 2025 for save opportunities after he led the team with nine saves, a 2.95 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 68:22 K:BB in 64 innings pitched in his third year in the majors. Garcia is still the odds-on favorite to be Texas' preferred closing option, but this news makes him less attractive in what could evolve into a committee.

Can Robert Garcia Take Over the Full-Time Closer Role in Texas?

Across 64 innings in 2025, Texas Rangers relief pitcher Robert Garcia pitched to a 4-8 record with a 2.95 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 68 strikeouts, and nine saves. The 29-year-old left-hander owns a solid 27.2% strikeout rate for his career with a manageable 7.7% walk rate to boot. Garcia ended 2025 tied for the Rangers' team lead in saves with Shawn Armstrong and Luke Jackson, both of whom are no longer with the organization. As a result, Garcia could be in line to assume the club's primary closer role in 2026. Additionally, Texas recently designated free agent signee Alexis Diaz for assignment, who may have been the most experienced closer the team had in camp. If Garcia pitches well in the early portion of the season, he could conceivably grab hold of the ninth-inning role in a Rangers bullpen that currently appears light on quality alternatives. Fantasy managers may want to target Garcia as a mid-round saves option in upcoming drafts before Opening Day.

Robert Garcia Could Emerge as the Preferred Ninth-Inning Option in Texas

Texas Rangers left-handed relief pitcher Robert Garcia established himself as a quality late-game option in his first season with the team in 2025. Across 64 innings (71 games), the 29-year-old posted a 4-8 record with a 2.95 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 68 strikeouts, and nine saves. Garcia's peripheral numbers actually got worse relative to his 2024 output with the Washington Nationals, as his strikeout rate dropped from 29.9% to 25.3% while his walk rate rose from 6.4% to 8.2%. Still, Garcia finished the year tied for the Rangers' team lead in saves with right-handers Shawn Armstrong and Luke Jackson, neither of whom is still with Texas. Heading into 2026, Garcia and veteran Chris Martin are reportedly the favorites for save chances, with former Cincinnati Reds closer Alexis Diaz lurking as a dark horse candidate. Martin has never recorded more than four saves in a single season, and Diaz pitched to an 8.15 ERA in 2025, so Garcia could easily emerge as the preferred ninth-inning option in Texas. With a current average draft position of pick 307, Garcia profiles as an under-the-radar potential source of saves for fantasy managers heading into 2026.

Robert Garcia, Chris Martin the Front-Runners for Saves in Texas

Texas Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said that relievers Robert Garcia and Chris Martin are the front-runners to receive most of the save chances to start the 2026 season, according to Jeff Wilson of DLLS Sports. Alexis Diaz could be another option to close out games, but the Rangers want to see how he performs in spring training games first. Garcia, 29, went 4-8 in 2025 with a 2.95 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, the first nine saves of his career, 68 strikeouts, and 22 walks in 64 relief innings. Shawn Armstrong and Luke Jackson tied Garcia for the team lead in saves last year, but both Armstrong and Jackson are gone, potentially giving Garcia the leg up as the Rangers' primary closer this year. Martin, 39, had a nice 2.98 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, two saves, and a 43:8 K:BB in 42 1/3 frames for Texas last season. This has the makings of a committee approach, so fantasy managers shouldn't invest too much into either Garcia or Martin.

Robert Garcia Takes Seventh Loss on Wednesday

Texas Rangers reliever Robert Garcia (1-7) suffered his seventh loss of the season in a 3-2 decision against the New York Yankees on Wednesday. Although the left-hander has been the Rangers' primary choice for saves this season, they brought him in early to pitch the top of the seventh in a 2-2 game. Garcia wasn't up to the task. He surrendered a one-out solo home run to Paul Goldschmidt and later gave up a two-out infield single to Ben Rice before manager Bruce Bochy replaced him with righty Shawn Armstrong. Garcia did collect two strikeouts, but the 29-year-old has now allowed at least one earned run in three straight appearances with two losses and two blown saves over that 1 1/3-inning span. The timing for Garcia is awful with the Rangers having acquired fellow high-leverage reliever Phil Maton at last week's trade deadline. Maton has tallied three straight scoreless appearances as a Ranger, even earning a save in Tuesday's win over the Yankees. He could emerge as Bochy's go-to guy (if he hasn't already) should Garcia's woes continue.

Robert Garcia Blows Save, Exits With Back Injury

Texas Rangers reliever Robert Garcia (back) turned in his second straight poor performance in a 6-4 win over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday. Garcia entered with a 4-2 lead and a chance to close out the Mariners in the bottom of the 10th inning, but the left-hander ended up with his fifth blown save of the year. He allowed two hits, including a game-tying home run by Randy Arozarena, and retired two batters (one strikeout) before leaving with a mid-back spasm. The Rangers went on to win the game, and manager Bruce Bochy said afterward that Garcia should be fine. Garcia, who blew a save and fell to 1-6 with a loss Friday, has surrendered three earned runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning in his first two appearances since Thursday's trade deadline. The Rangers happened to acquire a pair of high-leverage relievers, righty Phil Maton, and lefty Danny Coulombe, on Thursday. If Garcia doesn't turn it around, Maton, Coulombe, or Shawn Armstrong could start receiving save opportunities. Garcia has converted just nine of his 14 save chances, but he still has a 3.21 ERA with 47 strikeouts against 16 walks in 42 innings.

Robert Garcia Takes Loss on Friday

Texas Rangers reliever Robert Garcia fell to 1-4 on the season as the club dropped a 3-2 decision against the San Diego Padres on Friday. Garcia came in to pitch the bottom of the 10th and intentionally walked Manny Machado to put runners on first and second with nobody out. The left-hander later allowed a single in between two strikeouts to load the bases with two down. Garcia was unable to get out of the jam, as Jake Cronenworth hit a walk-off bloop single to end it. Although Garcia has given up an earned run in back-to-back appearances, he still owns a solid 2.91 ERA with 34:12 K:BB, a 1.21 WHIP, and six saves in 34 innings. The 29-year-old has been part of a closer committee with Luke Jackson, whose most recent save opportunity came on June 15.

Robert Garcia Earns Third Save Of Season Tuesday

Texas Rangers relief pitcher Robert Garcia earned his third save of the season in Tuesday's 2-0 win over the Blue Jays. Garcia came in to pitch the top of the ninth inning up by two and shut the door with a 1-2-3 performance, including two strikeouts. Luke Jackson, who leads the team in saves, pitched the eighth inning with the score tied 0-0. Garcia has pitched well this season, converting three of four save opportunities with 10 holds to go with a 2.35 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, and an 8.22 K/9 rate in 23 innings of work. The Rangers have implemented four different relievers in save situations over the last 15 days, and Garcia is tied for the most opportunities in that time with three. The team appears to be in flux when it comes to determining a potential closer, but Garcia has the sturdiest peripherals, making him worth considering for fantasy managers in deeper roto leagues.

Robert Garcia Records First Save

Texas Rangers relief pitcher Robert Garcia earned his first save of the year on Thursday in a 5-3 win over the Angels. He struck out one as part of a scoreless ninth inning where he didn't allow any baserunners. Luke Jackson was unavailable after pitching the past two days, which is what opened up the opportunity for Garcia. He's been very effective to start the season, allowing only two runs in his nine innings pitched with eight strikeouts and three walks. While he won't get enough saves to be relevant in standard leagues, he is a very valuable reliever wherever holds matter.

Robert Garcia Tosses Shutout Frame In Spring Debut

Texas Rangers left-handed pitcher Robert Garcia (forearm) tossed a shutout frame during his spring debut on Thursday against the San Diego Padres. Garcia allowed one free pass and tallied one punchout. Garcia was battling nerve irritation in his left forearm during the early part of spring training. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his production during camp as he is expected to compete for a high-leverage role in the bullpen. Earlier in the offseason, the Rangers acquired Garcia from the Nationals in exchange for first baseman Nathaniel Lowe. Last season, Garcia posted a 4.22 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP with 75 punchouts. He generated an elite 2.53 xERA, suggesting he should see significant positive regression in 2025. He will be competing for save opportunities alongside right-hander Chris Martin.
