Dodgers
Free-agent infielder Chris Owings has signed a minor-league deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers and has received an invite to MLB spring training. The 32-year-old has spent minimal time in the big leagues over the last several seasons, appearing in just 76 games from 2020-2023. The light-hitting middle infielder has been far better with his glove than his bat throughout his big-league career. Owings is a .239 career hitter with 37 home runs, 79 stolen bases, and a .650 OPS across 723 games between the D-backs, Royals, Red Sox, Rockies, Orioles, and Pirates. That production has graded out 32% below the league average, as per Owings' career 68 wRC+. He will likely serve as depth in major league camp and will be hard-pressed to get any reps on a loaded Dodgers team in the 2024 season.

Pirates Sign Chris Owings To Minor-League Deal
The Pittsburgh Pirates signed free-agent infielder Chris Owings to a minor-league deal on Thursday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training. Owings, a veteran of 10 major-league seasons, spent the 2022 season with the Baltimore Orioles but hit just .107/.254/.143 with no homers, six runs scored and a stolen base in 26 games played. He didn't fare a whole lot better in the minors for the New York Yankees or in an independent league after he was released by Baltimore. Owings hasn't played over 100 games in a single major-league season since 2018 with the Arizona Diamondbacks, and he'll strictly serve as veteran infield depth with the rebuilding Pirates.

Chris Owings Designated For Assignment
The Baltimore Orioles designated infielder Chris Owings for assignment on Wednesday. In a corresponding move, the team activated right-handed pitcher Austin Voth, who was claimed off waivers from the Washington Nationals on Tuesday. Owings hasn't been able to get anything going at the plate this year. Over 26 games, he's slashed .107/.254/.143 with only two extra-base hits (both doubles). We'll see if another team is willing to take a shot on the 30-year-old veteran, who has a career .239 batting average to go along with 37 home runs over 710 games.

Chris Owings Out For Rest Of Season
Colorado Rockies infielder Chris Owings (thumb) has had a pin inserted into his thumb and will not return to action this season, according to Thomas Harding of MLB.com. Owings appeared in just 21 games this year, and was a decent option in deep formats as he slashed .326/.420/.628 with one home run, two steals, five RBI and nine runs scored. There's no reason he should remain rostered in any format.

Chris Owings Undergoes Surgery On His Thumb
Colorado Rockies infielder Chris Owings (thumb) underwent surgery to fix mallet finger on his left thumb on Friday, according to interim manager Mike Redmond, but the team doesn't have a timetable for his return. There's a good chance we won't see Owings on the field again at the major league level this season. The 29-year-old had a great .326/.420/.628 slash line with the Rockies, but it came in only 43 at-bats with a homer, five RBI and two stolen bases. There's no reason to hold onto him, even in NL-only leagues, especially without a firm timetable for a return. Expect Brendan Rodgers and Ryan McMahon to continue sharing playing time in Colorado at the keystone.

Rockies Place Chris Owings On Injured List
The Colorado Rockies placed infielder/outfielder Chris Owings (thumb) on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with a mallet finger of the left thumb and recalled infielder/outfielder Connor Joe from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move. It sounds as if Owings may be out longer than the 10 days, but there isn't exactly a firm timetable for how long he might be sidelined. Owings has been solid in just 50 plate appearances for the Rockies this year, going 14-for-43 (.326) with one home run, five RBI and two stolen bases. Joe will provide versatility off the bench but is unlikely to see enough at-bats to even be worth much of a look in the short term in NL-only affairs.

Chris Owings Swats Pinch-Hit Homer On Sunday
Colorado Rockies outfielder Chris Owings went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit solo home run in a 3-1 win over the Padres on Sunday. Owings stepped up as a pinch-hitter in the top of the seventh inning what the game tied at 1-1. He took reliever Craig Stammen deep for a solo home run, his first of the season, to give the Rockies the lead. It was his only at-bat of the ball game but it sure was a big one. The veteran utilityman is slashing .306/.405/.667 with one home run, four RBI, and two stolen bases over 36 at-bats this year. He's been effective over his incredibly small sample size but he doesn't play enough to warrant fantasy consideration.

Chris Owings Goes Hitless On Sunday
Colorado Rockies infielder/outfielder Chris Owings went 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout in a 5-0 shutout loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. The Rockies couldn't get much of anything going on Sunday, collecting just four hits--all singles--as a team. Owings was able to reach base in one at-bat with a walk but didn't come close to scoring in the lopsided affair. The 29-year-old utilityman was activated from the 60-day IL back on June 22 after missing over two months with a left thumb sprain. He batted .533 (8-for-15) before getting hurt back in April but is just 0-for-7 with a 5:1 K/BB ratio since rejoining the club. He doesn't hold much fantasy value as a part-time player and he'll take away at-bats from players like Garrett Hampson and Brendan Rodgers, which dings their fantasy potential as well.

Chris Owings Activated From The 60-Day Injured List
Colorado Rockies infielder Chris Owings (thumb) was activated from the 60-day injured list on Tuesday. He's been sidelined since the beginning of April with a sprained thumb. The 29-year-old hit .533 (8-for-15) with six extra-base hits, three RBI, and two stolen bases over seven games before being placed on the injured list. The Rockies infielder is available off the bench for Tuesday's game against the Mariners. Owings is expected to serve in a utility role for the Rockies and is mainly an option in deep-league formats. Joe Harvey was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

Chris Owings Nearly Ready For A Rehab Stint
Colorado Rockies second baseman Chris Owings (thumb) may begin a rehab assignment on Sunday, according to skipper Bud Black. The 29-year-old was eligible to come off the 60-day injured list on Wednesday, a space he has occupied since the beginning of April because of a sprained thumb. While Black's revelation certainly indicates Owings is making progress, fantasy managers may still need to wait a few more weeks before he is ready to return to the big club.
